Would this crack give you pause.

I'd have to pass. That's a serious crack. Whoever has that knife should send it to GEC to be re-handled.

Anyone else notice the gap between pin & bone on the left side of the knife? Is that from separation or shrinkage of the bone?

I don't think it's a gap, it looks like the pin was countersunk too deep, so what you're seeing is actually a shadow.

Well, with primitive bone, I don't think any crack is an obvious defect. Without having it in hand, I can't say what the situation is, but I suspect it was done on purpose and that it is not a crack that developed during or after pinning. Certainly not during pinning, or GEC would not have released it. I think it was pinned in those places for a symetrical look, but unfortunatly cracks through pins are suspect because in every other bone, it would be a serious flaw.

The gap at the pin is just shadow or polishing compound. That is typical.

Before this question was asked, I looked at that knife without any thought to the crack, but after the question, it would give me pause.

My understanding is that the primitive bone is stabilized, so I doubt if the crack would spread.
I would take a chance on it because it has a lot of character-- that's what makes the primitive bone special.

However, the crack looks occurred when the pins were put in and that that means it probably will spread.

Whether it is a defect, or merely looks like a defect, it is so distracting that I would never consider buying that knife - even at a greatly marked down price.:thumbdn:

I suspect you would soon end up with a 'half-scaled' knife, that and you'd be looking at a costly re-handling job...

Primitive Bone is fascinating and has character certainly, but I question its durability. It is after all, exhumed bone that is then treated. Anyway, the knife you show would I'm sure, soon start disappointing.

Gee,I guess you got your answer;) But yea,its pretty fugly to me too.Id offer them half price and rehandle the thing.I dont think they would ever find a happy buyer for that.

Pass on it, another one you like just as well will show up one day. I wouldnt even pay half price for it.

There are plenty others out there, if it bothered you in the least I don't know why you gave it a second thought....

When GEC did their first primitive bone I sent back about half of my allotment because of cracks here and there. Within 3 days I had a dozen emails / calls looking for the most cracked up nasty primitive bone variants available.... To each his own; and even that knife has a nut out there that is going to think it is the nicest one on made...

To me any line, natural or not, going thru a pin is going to have a perception problem (at the least). If it was there to begin with, they should have avoided it with the pins. They have told me this primitive bone is more like working with stone, than bone. And any fissures in it have been there many many years before they get their hands on it. But in this hobby, with us picky knife nuts; perception is reality!

Find one that speaks to you...

Thanks for your opinions guys. I wouldn't have looked twice at it but all the other single blade pioneers seemed to have no character.
In the end I wound up purchasing a Northfield sunfish in snakewood.
