Would this work for my disk grinder backing?

http://www.amazon.com/Silicone-Duro...1398090581&sr=8-1&keywords=70+durometer+sheet

The description on the usaknifemaker site lists theirs at 70 durometer. http://usaknifemaker.com/grinder-disc-rubber-backing.html

Unfortunately they are out of stock
so I'm looking to good old Amazon.

Thanks!

I just got an email from Tracy because I'm on a list, announcing a new manager employee who came from walmart

Coming from Walmart he will have experience with inventory management and I hope he can correct the incidence of stock-outs / being out of stock

I think he has considerable lost sales for that.

I'm glad to hear it. As a small business guy myself I do like to give any business I canto people in the same boat as myself. Hopefully this new person can keep things humming for him and keep his enterprise in good shape!

I've learned a few things from the informational videos he posts as well.

Yup, I used gasket material for mine, but I'm pretty sure it's 1/16" instead of 1/8". It's worked well for me, though I've heard the rubber is nice.

I have tried rubber and was not impressed. The cork worked much better. Trying to get that silicone to stick to your disc might be interesting. I am not aware of a good adhesive for silicone yet. I would be interested if there was one out there. Have several other uses in mind.

I do at least 85% of the disc work without any backing material (sometimes I do it all with just the steel disc).

My typical process is to grind with a 60X on the belt grinder, then go to the steel disc with 120X Rhyno, then 320X Rhyno.

If I'm stopping at 320X, then I peel off that disc, put a backer disc (viton rubber) on, and then put the SAME 320X paper onto that.

The backing material I'm using is viton rubber that's 1/16" thick. The 3M feathering disc adhesive holds it to the steel or aluminum disc very securely. The adhesive holds the paper securely to the rubber as well. :)

I got a pile of them on ebay for like $1 each. I've only used 1 of them so far though, LOL.

I remember Ed Caffrey talking about using cork on his 9" disc, but I haven't tried it yet. I had a roll in my hand one of the last times I was at the NAPA store but put it back. :foot:

Thanks for the reminder Chuck, I'll have to give it a try! :)

I read somewhere that they help with any "chatter" when grinding on the disk.

I'm just excited to get it rolling. Feathering adhesive should arrive today.

It is only for finishing work. I have never use it when roughing in or shaping. The backing works great if you finish on the disc. I do mine by hand and my finishing disc is on the floor collecting dust.

Well the Ed Caffery recommendation of the 1/16" thick cork works super for me I have the cork on five discs with a different grit on each. As I have said I prefer a thicker dense rubber type for 60 grit. Frank

I was messing around with it last night. Picked up songs 1/8 cork from NAPA down the road and it worked well. Flattened out some bevels on a previously ground knife. Edges were crisp. Crisp that is, until I used the disk to long and the paper was shot...:barf:

I found I was running my disc too fast when I first started to use it. I was using lots of sandpaper more than after I slowed it down. For 120 to 600 I found about 40% worked best. For 60 grit I went to about 60$ of output capacity. Frank
