I'm not going to mention any names as I haven't heard back from the seller.

I ordered a woodlore blank for a project and this is what I got.

- rust on blade (not oiled)
- Tip damaged
- not sharp
- all of the outside of the knife is not polished and is black

I already know I'm not happy and I wanted to vent, but I'd like some objective feedback please..

None of the blades I have purchased over the years (seven IIRC) have come with rust or any damage, so I guess that is what I would expect.

If I purchased from a picture, I would expect what the pictured showed.

If I could clean it up in a few minutes, I would not send it back, but that's me.

"black" ???

Its not ebay and is sold as a blank that you just need to put the handle on..

From a knifemakers website..

I have purchased the enzo trapper and timberwolf blanks and this is well below their standard.

I am also concerned with the tip damage it is not hardened correctly..

I would not be happy to be sent that, unless it was shown to be in that condition and priced accordingly .

I have also had the seller say that it must have been damaged in transit and the rust happened because it was in transit for 2 weeks.

If a blade is heat treated to 58-59 as stated when sold, what would it take to do this to the tip?

Would O1 have this level of rust in 2 weeks? And if it did, why wouldn't you just oil or grease it prior to sending?

No big deal for me. A "blank" is exactly that, something in pre-finished condition but with the general outline shaped out for you. It may or may-not arrive sharpened. Rust? Who knows when it formed, but some oil and some polishing of the finished blade will take care of that.

Was it advertised as "completely finished & ready to use"? If not, then expect to put some work into it.

I've only bought one blank before, and it needed a lot of work. It seemed to be die-cut with a very thick cutting blade, because the spine was far from squared. With that as my experience with a pretty good brand (Fallkniven), I would be OK with the blackness and the rust on your blank, but the damaged tip is just poor handling.

01 is not by any means stainless steel. Not as bad as other 'carbon steel" but quite able to rust. If pristine, it is unlikely to remain that way if the knife is used.

At this time of the year, moving metal items in and out of heated areas can result in condensation. I have had even well-oiled blades arrive in Winter with discolored spots, but those discolorations were easily removed with metal polish.

Blades, on receipt, should be immediately removed from packaging and wiped off with an oiled cloth or paper towel then left in the open air until their temperature can no longer cause condensation.

What is important here is what you were told you were laying out your hard-earned cash to buy.

o1 will rust in a hearbeat. The blank should have been oiled/greased. The seller should know this. The tip being damaged in transit is BS since it should have been packed properly. You're not happy, return it.

The seller has offered to make things right and I appreciate that a lot.

I ordered a few blanks at the same time. Below is a comparison shot and why I was disappointed with this. The others both have a finished spine and handle area. If I didn't have them I may have been more willing to accept it but the blade edge was well below par. All others were very sharp.

I knew I could sand the knife back but when the rust was on the grinded blade edge I'd be essentially sanding back something that I actually wanted as part of the knife. The scandi grind.

I didn't show the spyderco mule I got as it was blemished version which was crazy sharp and perfect..

Thanks all for your comments. It was therapeutic for me.
