you could order it with exactly the blades/tools you want - no more, no less??? Maybe a red Farmer with scissors instead of a saw, or in addition to a saw. Or a 111mm Soldier with an electricians blade in place of the can opener. Etc.

I understand there are modders that will probably build about anything you want. (I'm not sure of their pricing for such work, though).

I know that Vic puts out millions of knives each year, at very reasonable prices, and that it would increase costs and prices if they had to "take orders" for special knives. There probably aren't enough of us knife knuts around the world to make it worthwhile for them, hence the modders have stepped in to fill that void.

Imagine this: Pick your frame, pick your handle material & color, pick your blade(s)/tools - all done over the internet - click, click, click - got your new Vic on the way! I'd be willing to pay extra for that - how about you? :D

..... Just day dreamin' here!:rolleyes::yawn:;):D

I'm not sure how much -more- I would pay but that would be a neat feature. But you are basically only able to change the layers rather than individual tools. For instance, I would pay more for a Compact with the reamer instead of the hook. But that layer doesn't work right.

I think they make more money by not offering custom choices. forcing people to buy pre-determined tool sets means that someone has to buy the slightly more expensive SAK if they need that one tool.

Absolutely!!!

And don't forget serrated small blade and a damascus large blade option!!!:D

;)

I would , tho i find Stock SAK's suit me well . IIRC Gerber offered that option with multi's .

I have a pair of the old Wenger scissors on a small folder I bought from Eddie Bauer many years ago. These are serrated scissors with a long track record with me. They have literally out lasted every other pair of Vic scissors including many Leatherman Micra scissors one after another after another because there for a while I was going through a new micra every time the scissors dulled. I tried sharpening them but it was just fruitless and easier to buy a new one. In the end I always go back to those old serrated Wenger scissors because they keep working when the others dull. What I'd really love to see is Vic come out with a set of scissors that could perform long term with these on my Wenger or at least make them an option for those of us that like it. I would have to say when the Vic regular scissors are sharp that they do make cleaner cuts but the difference is so slight I can't see why anyone would complain. The serrated just last and last compared to any plain edge scissor I own.

I'd also like the option of not getting certain tools and having others in place of them. For example I rarely if ever have pulled out the can opener on my pair. I realize for some this may be a tool they use but the truth is if I need a can opened bad enough in the field I guarantee you I can get it opened with one of the other tools and do without that one. I have never had need for the smaller flat head on the same tool and find for the most part that in most cases something else would suffice for that as well. I would much rather have say this Swiss Tool X with the plain edge blade, a serrated in place of the can opener, keeping the scissors and for that matter I've never once used the bigger flat head screw driver on mine either. To me thats another waste of space for something I could use. I could just as easily get rid of it for a serrated blade instead even if the serrated blade was only as big or similar in size to a smaller pen blade taking up no more space than the screw driver does now. The thing is if I need a serrated blade its usually just to cut something like rope or cardboard I'd rather not use my plain edge on so a grunt blade that small would be just fine for me personally. I almost always use the smaller flat head that has the bottle opener built in on the same blade though and have never once needed that bigger flat head blade.

Thats exactly why none of the major multitool companies offer a build-your-own-tool option.

I'd definitely pay abit more for that!

No, I would not. For me, there would be no point. Maybe I'm just too easy or lack imagination, but I find models with perfect implement sets in each size category. That only goes for SAKs. When it comes to the Swisstools, there are basic design concepts I find unsatisfying that can't be changed out, like nail nicks for deploying implements, a real handicap when working with gloves on or in the wet, and the Spirit scissors which compare unfavorably to those on 58 mm SAKs.

Yes I would. I've thought about this same thing, very good thread. I have 6 Vic's and there is always something on one of them that I wish were something else. And even though they do have a wide range of knives I just cant seem to find that perfect match.

MY DREAM VICTORINOX
I would love one with a saw, Marline spike, Reg. lg. blade, Phillips screw driver, std. screw driver, can opener with Sm. std. screw driver, awl and scissors. With yellow ALOX scales but able to carry the tooth pick and tweezers. I know what I'll be dreaming of.:D:D:D

I DID pay for just the tools I want—from scibeer (a great modder.) I had scissors added to a Farmer. I paid significantly more than I would have for a stock Farmer. I also considered it money well spent for the perfect companion to a BM 940. While it was significantly more than a stock Farmer, it was significantly less than the 940.

I'd certainly pay more for personal from-the-factory tool selection. Lots more.

I'd definitely pay extra for it.I don't think it'll ever happen though.
They been around so long........old dog,new tricks,etc.

Does anyone know a good estimate of what a modder charges to customize your sak?

I think if they were to offer such a thing it wouldn't be a bit more, not even a fair bit more, it would be A LOT more. Both the price for the customized SAK's and the standard SAK's would go way up.

Each knife is designed so all tools fit into the layers. Sure they could build a online tool that would allow and disallow certain tools to be in one knife so everything fit together, but this would be dozens or 100's of possible outcomes. That would result in going from dozens of manufacturing lines to people putting these tools together by hand because they are "one offs".

Now a $50 knife is $500 :(

You get where I'm going... But I do agree, it would be nice if I could have customized tools in my SAK and leathermans.

Yes, I would LOVE it if this were an option. I am having trouble finding a swiss knife with all the tools I want, but not too much unnecessary tools, because I don't need the extra weight. For example, I think pliers are useful and important to have, but they are not that common. The corkscrew is completely useless to me, yet every model seems to have it.

I hope as manufacturing becomes more developed in the next decade, this will be possible. I know Levi's has been experimenting with customizing jeans within certain parameters for years.

It all depends on the particular modification. I thought adding scissors to the Farmer was reasonable (for me.) I then asked about putting micarta scales and a pocket clip on a OHT, and it turned out to be WAY more than I was willing to pay. Some mods require hard to find (expensive) parts. Some require you to buy a donor knife for the parts. It depends on the mod, and you just don't know until you ask.

Oh yes - and a Farmer with a scissors instead of a saw (or even in addition) is exactly what I would get.

I think a farmer with good quality scissors in addition to everything else it has would be great.
Also having the option to go Alox like OP said would be pretty coool, I got a few Alox SAK's on the way actually.
