Would you carry a 5" knife in NJ?

As a kid, we all assumed the law was '4 fingers' but could never find any 'men in blue' who agreed on this length....:

I've grown up in Jersey,(and left), always carried knives over 4", my brother in law, who was a carreer LEO in Central Jersey said the 4 finger rule is bunk, think about it how many people do you know whose 4 fingers measure the same.

In a situation like that, being a betting man, I'd bet that knife would definitely be confiscated. Don't think you'd wind up in jail...but that is one bet I wouldn't make!

Sounds like theft to me. If a cop is taking my knife he better be taking me with him. probably not worth the trouble but you know that knife is going into his pocket

Well it's settled. Another victory for political correctness. I cancelled the order for that nifty 5 inch "El Vaquero" :( .

Now that's a bet I'd make! :D And, going along with T. Erdelyi, as kids, we all realized that our blades were all way over 'our' 4 fingers & always hoped they were talking about the 4 fingers of the 6' 5" cop on the force. Sorry to hear you gave up on the 5" 'El Vaquero'.

I find that 4 finger rule business particularly annoying. On my hand, that is about 3.1 inches. On my obese neighbors hand (who has the fattest fingers I have ever seen) it is 4 inches. Now that ain't fair.

Some interesting reading here. Apparently the case went to legality of the object, as well as intent. (BTW, this was reported to be a 3" blade)

The same jury, which deliberated for almost nine hours over a two-day period, also found him innocent of possession of a knife for illegal purposes and but convicted him of hindering his own apprehension for fleeing the scene, and of possession of an illegal weapon.

Assistant Prosecutor Judson Hamlin said Levine, who testified at his trial, lied about why he had the pocket knife with which he stabbed Lopez, and lied about the fight and circumstances leading up to the fatal stabbing.
Hamlin noted Levine initially told police the knife was in his boot but changed his story on the witness stand and said it was in his pocket. Levine said he used the knife to sharpen oversized pencils used in his engineering classes.
Hamlin told the jury that a close look at the grooved pencil he said he sharpened with the knife will reveal that the knife was never used on the pencil.
