Would you ever walk up to a total stranger and ask about the knife they are carrying?

I saw a guy at an Art Fair yesterday. He had a Large Sebenza in a very nice leather sheath attached to his belt. I felt the urge to walk up to him and ask him about it, maybe strike up a conversation as I was carrying my BM 615 and Mnandi. But I stopped myself because I thought maybe that would be strange - a total stranger walking up and saying "Hey I couldn't help but notice you are carrying a Sebenza..." Then I imagined from an objective perspective people seeing two guys with their knives out and talking... So I just resisted the urge and just went on with my business...

Why would you stop? If someone is carrying a Sebenza they are probably "into" knives and would enjoy the conversation.

i was at the skatepark and some kid saw my pocket clip and asked me what knife i had. i told him it was a para2, then he whipped out the same knife! we started talking about different knives we have, steel, and it turns out that he is also a member of BF. it was great to see someone so young (age 14 i believe) be interested in knives.

Yes, I've done this several times to people around my neighborhood, since I'm of Filipino heritage, it's actually encouraged to have knives and machetes.
Things I've found:
Spyderco Delica 4
Spyderco Endura 4
Spyderco 2nd Gen Stainless Delica
Emerson Mini Commander
Boker Plus Titan Drop
Kershaw Leek
They all don't use them that much because it's mostly for the coolness factor, but they all do know how knives work and not to treat them like prybars or the like.

I dont think it would be a bad thing. I would probably not bust out the knives at an art fair though. But no harm in talking about it.
He may not be a knife guy, but clearly has good taste and a passion for the finer things. Im sure he wouldnt mind talking about it.

I would compliment the owner as I would with a car or watch that I happen to notice in someone's possession.I think that most people are more than happy to have someone express an interest in their hobbies (especially since it is so rare)

I have a couple times, but sometimes I get the weird look because I know what knife they have just seeing the clip. More times then not they are cool people and its fun to share the stuff we know and learn some things

I would have never held a Strider if I hadn't asked a stranger about it after seeing it in his pocket. Right when I mentioned Strider, he whipped it out and handed it to me. Totally made my day.

Definitely inquire about it if you see it.

I agree with this quote. I think most people who carry a knife like knives and would be glad to talk to you about what they have. I have people all the time who ask me what I have and most of the time we end up in a story about what both of us are carrying and why. ASK AWAY!! Kevin :D:D

I would, depending on the circumstances and if I was positive that I knew what knife they had. I'm also a watch collector and I have on occasion talked to strangers about what watch they are wearing. I would do it discreetly though, not knowing if someone was comfortable having attention focused on them.

On one of my older cell phones, I had put a knife clip on it so it wouldn't sink to the bottom of my pocket. A contractor at work made the comment "Can't go anywhere without your Spydie, can you?" Showed him my cell phone, then the Al Mar. He was more of a gun nut than a knife nut, he like to the western style shoot out competitions.

I was at the Verizon store today.. I needed a leather holster for my IPhone.. I am at the counter paying, and I decided to cut the tie wrap in the package. I pull out my Les George VECP.. Some guy walks up to me and says " hey is that a Gerber?" :)

All I could do is smile and say "no, but it just looks like one" :(

Funny as I was at Lowe's the other day and someone actually questioned me on the knife I was carrying. I had my Hogue EX01 clipped to my cargos and he mentioned the clip, if you're familiar you know it has that kinda' funky spoon shaped clip. I pulled it out and showed him and had a brief conversation, he was pocketing a Ti Millie and we swapped for a minute checking out each others knives. Damn that Ti Millie is sweet I have to get one, he was likewise lovin the Hogue. Here we are in the middle of Lowe's pulling out our blades, got a few uneasy looks but it was cool all in all. We shook hands and parted ways knowing we each had a positive experience in handling a knife each of us doesn't have. I walked away feeling I gotta' have that Ti Millie and I bet he was thinking the same about the Hogue, we were both impressed with each others knife/tool...

I have had a couple of people walk up to me and ask what I was carrying, I did not like it, one time I was in a business and a women looked at me and said what kind of knife is that, and guess what, she and her husband sold automatic knives and she tried to sell me a knife, but she still took me by surprise.

I saw a guy at a flea market with a Benchmade 9050 clipped to his back pocket. I didn't say anything to him (He didn't look very friendly) But I thought it was very cool.

I would and have - particularly if it's a nice knife. I would think anybody forking out enough cash to carry a Sebbie wouldn't mind the attention.
