Would you ever walk up to a total stranger and ask about the knife they are carrying?

i have been nown to ask people about what they are carrying but only if i notice something that sparks my interest i ended up talking to a guy at a local town fair for 45 min and ended up having quite a bit in commen he had served in the army did 3 tours and carried the same 3 knives he had on him that day hell of a man

a total stranger? no, id at least introduce myself first.

ive seen a lot of clips and can usually identify what brands they arent, which means i usually see cheapo knives. flea market specials. i dont bother asking them.

although im sure my clip(s) have been noticed far more, only one person ive run across has ever asked me in the last ten years. i wish our hobby and passion were more accepted.

Nice to know that so many of you are open to being approached by a stranger!!! Now I wish I had said hello!!!

I did once and it wasn't a good experience so I haven't since.

However I have regulars (I'm a waiter) that ask about my knives every now and then and i'm always happy to chat about 'em:thumbup:

Generally no, unless I see he has one and asks me 1st

We'll intro then talk shop

Good question.
I think it depends on the situation/location.
Out in the field, I'd say fine.
Within a city I'd think it over.
If that someone is in a hurry or busy, I'd leave him alone.

I don't, mostly because I wouldn't want anyone doing it to me. I don't carry a knife for social interactions, I carry it because I like them and they are useful tools. There's also almost no stigma with knives whre I live and work, so they are common. It would be more like commenting on their socks, which would be a little weird, imo.

i was at the skatepark and some kid saw my pocket clip and asked me what knife i had. i told him it was a para2, then he whipped out the same knife! we started talking about different knives we have, steel, and it turns out that he is also a member of BF. it was great to see someone so young (age 14 i believe) be interested in knives.
So sweet on so many levels, but a Para2 is risky to carry if you're 14; I get bad looks with a Delica and I'm 15, albeit I have passed for a 12 year old.

Well where I live this 15 year doesn't get and second looks for a ZT 350...

It depends where I'm at. I've asked some folks in the past about their knives, usually they're carrying a Gerber, and usually aren't that knowledgeable or that interested in knives, but I give them props for at least having one.

I dont normally ask folks about their knives unless I see them pull it out to use it. But, just this past weekend I was walking through a parking lot, and a lady and her young daughter approached me. "Sir could you use your knife to cut this strap off my daughters shoe? It is really bothering her." Well, I was happy to. I pulled out a PM2 and cut the loose strap off the little girls shoe. I found out later the lady knew my wife. So I guess she wasnt a total stranger. But it felt good to help someone with my knife. I admit I was a bit surprised by the request tho.

When I first got into knives I was all gung-ho about checking in with folks with clips. It turned out that there is a lot of cheap crap out there and conversations really didn't go anywhere. Now I'm more particular about mentioning a knife clip, and save it for when it's something I recognize as quality.

I've had some great conversations, and seen a couple custom knives I may not have seen otherwise.

Even one bad experience would not be enough to keep me from seeking out fellow knife knuts. If we struck out the first time we asked out a girl, we wouldn't give up on girls, now, would we?:D

But if you had ~8000 posts on a sock forum, I don't think it would be weird at all.

Hells yeah!

I carried around a rubber chicken for a day last week at a conference, and man alive, what a conversation starter! Ladies friggin' love rubber chickens as it turns out, especially ones that make noise. Same idea, different material item. I usually only approach folks carrying a Kershaw, Spyderco, BM, or nicer since in southwest Virginia, everybody carries something. This is the pocketknife Mecca.

If I were stuck in a waiting around situation, then perhaps, as it could make for decent passing the time conversation.

Ive asked a couple times. Flea market blades both times, i swore the second one was a benchmade clip untill he pulled it out. Now i dont ask anymore. That said if someone asked me i would definitely be excited to shoot the shizen about blades
