Would you give it away for a samuel colt gold etch 124 with mammoth ivory scales (three or four ever made)?

If you're getting something in return that's not giving it away. It's trading, or swapping. :D. Nice Buck!

The only thing I would trade for my no frills factory stock 124 would be enough money to buy another. I do not plan on being without one for the rest of my life.

I'd want them both...but, if I could only have one, then the Sam Colt! Preston

Haebbie,
Is there an offer in the works? Your just playing I can tell!! Your so FUNNY!!!

Well Herbert,

For whatever my opinion is worth.....
If it were my deal to make, the Ivory Sam Colt would be on it's way to me!!!!! Just make sure it has no cracks or discoloration in the Ivory handle.

With how many one of a kind Custom shop Buck knives there are out there it is hard for me to agree that one that has 3 or 4 made is one of the rarest/hardest to find Buck knives. But if you like Sam Colt and mammoth Ivory it is hard to go wrong. I have not seen another Old Custom shop Pearl 124. It's hard for me to imagine there are more than 2-3 out there, but I'm just guessing. The only 100 series old Custom shop knives I have in Pearl are a 102 and a 106. I have a 107 in pearl but made by Joe Houser after the old custom shop closed. Your 124 is the only other 100 series pearl knife I have seen. I doubt they made many 100 series knives in pearl.....Hard choice for you:D:D:D

No matter how rare, I don't care much for an etched blade.

I'd hold on to the 124 w/ MOP. It's absolutely perfect the way it is. Why clutter that beautiful slab of polished steel...

I agree with Steelheadbully.

Though it's number 93, it doesn't mean there were 93 exactly like it. It could just mean it was the 93rd CS 124. My only "old" Custom Shop knife is a 928. It's number 28 of an estimated 66. All handle variations were included in the number count as it was explained to me. 27 and 29 could be pearl if you get my meaning.

no Sir. unless i wanted to let it go as well. otherwise id choose cash to pay with if that's an option?

Here's a photo borrowed from EEE. The sam colt 124 was never sold to the public. The 3 or 4 made were given only to Colt big wigs and Sam Shortes. While pearl is one of the nicest and rarest handle materials more were made as it was an option in the original custom shop. Like any old custom shop knife you don't see them very often because they are probably tucked away. There's one collector out there that had every single buck knife made in the custom shop with a pearl handle. Must have been nice... You cannot however reproduce a gold etch Aurum blade and the fact that it wasn't made/sold for the public makes it even harder to find. Not all custom shop knives have serial numbers either. In that case they usually predate serialized ones depending on the model.

You can recreate the MOP CS 124 if you like the look but never the Colt. To try and buy either on the open market it would be much harder to get the Colt because of the sheer number of well heeled Colt collectors who can afford buy a knife that is basically a once in a lifetime offering. I imagine you could have Leroy make you the 124 for under a grand but the Colt would sell for well over double that. It really depends on how you value the collectabilty now and in the future. Colt memorabilia has a long history of skyrocketing in price.

All knives ordered from the Custom shop from 1982 - 1993 had serial #'s.... There are Custom Knives made from Custom shop makers without serial #s but these are not knives ordered from the Buck custom shop. I'd have to imagine there was down time in the Custom shop so Leroy and the others were able to create very nice Custom knives to take home with them just to sell decades later to Buck custom collectors. So the blanks they made these knives on were never serialized because the knives were never sold. They were just brought home or given as gifts for the most part. Your 905's without serial #s are not knives ordered from the old custom shop but more likely something created by the custom shop makers in their down time or one of the first handfuls of that model they made, but not knives that were actually ordered or offered to the public. The person who had all the knives offered by the custom shop in pearl had all the 900 series knives in pearl, not all of the 100 series knives in pearl....None of us know everything, even the ones who know the most like Leroy and Joe don't know everything Buck, Some of the hard collectors know as much as a lot of the in house Buck people and probably more.....

This came straight from Leroy who called BS (his words): The custom shop opened in 1980 and the first two years or so knives were not serialized until about 1982. Customers also ordered knives specifically without serial numbers. And you'd get fired on the spot if caught stealing a knife and nothing was given to them to take home... Knives did get stolen though as I have a 923 and 901 that were "borrowed." Some of the first 905's did not have the mountain man etching as it evolved several times. I have a 905 from the custom shop that has a different eagle etching than what came later in the 80s. You are correct about the pearl collection, it wasn't the whole 100 series but several. I'd rather take the word of someone who built everything and worked for Buck for almost 20 years than most collectors imho.
