Would you go fixed-only if legal/social issues disappeared?

The fixed blade i carry the most is a La Griffe i like it because its a good high quality blade, fast to draw and easily pocketable if you so desire :)

I wouldnt need a knife bigger than the La G. unless im going out of town and into the woods. I think folders and FBs both have their place though. For SD a fixed blade is always better but i havent had to unzip many bad guys lately  but I have opened lots of mail ;)

In Texas, we can carry both. If I carry a fixed blade, it's usually a medium sized knife -- 3.5" to 4.5".

I've bought some nice folders recently, I wouldn't give 'em up.

I'm new enough to Idaho that I don't know all the carry laws yet, but I've seen a few FBs out and about, and pretty much any old folder seems to work here, and there are dozens of sporting goods shoppes selling just about everything conceivable.

Assuming that the SOCIAL issues were eliminated, I'd happily EDC a fixed blade, in addition to a folder. I'd be looking for a carry method that gets it off the belt, though. I dunno, maybe a thigh rig. I would want it to be handy but not uncomfortable or in the way.

Nowadays I carry at least two blade sizes, and I'd be fine with one of them being fixed. In fact, I suppose I could use a piggy-back scabbard to carry a small one with the bigger one.

Still, I'd keep the multi-tool or SAK in the load-out. I'd look pretty silly trying to open a can or bottle with a 4-inch puukko.

I'd still keep a folder but the size would go down. I'd invest in a high quality fixed blade, and sheath system. Something that would last and very tough. Easy to carry. Its hard to think about that when you can't carry it as much plus if it gets taken away.

I seldom bother with F/B's even when socially acceptable . I find them a PITA to carry , and uninteresting to play with . Even with the best sheaths , they are uncomfortable to sit with , and handles tend to poke , etc.

YMMV ,

I like to rotate a couple small Bark River fixed blades and find them just as comfortable to carry as a folder. Of course these are little knives, the BRKT PSK and a BRKT Mikro Canadian 2, they have a sheeple friendly 2" blade and look unassuming.

I adapted a key chain setup that allows me to keep the knife upright in my front pocket, and I'm able to withdraw the knife and thumb off the Kydex sheath with one hand, very easy and convienient. Both of my little barkies have a kydex sheath so I can easily switch between the two.

The BRKT's also have a number of different scale types so there really isn't any reason to get bored:D
For work I found that I prefer a folder, mainly because I'm sometimes crouched, sitting or in a kneeling position, so the knife doesn't get put in my pocket or resheathed right away. The folder I can close up, but the fixed blade has it's blade exposed and can pose a safety issue.
So for me I like the ability to carry both fixed and folders, and in my state of Ohio, folder laws are somewhat fuzzy, while I haven't found any legalities against a small fixed blade.

If I could wear a sheath knife with no social problems, then I would do so on a daily basis. I have a liking for Scandinavian puukos, and the ease that they carry and are drawn for use. I'd probably edc my old Wood handle Frosts mora number 2.

I go fixed blade only even though the legal/social issues haven't disappeared. Not much point in doing otherwise for the things that I use a knife for.

Half the size and no sheath, can easily sit in any pocket, or if I want a small pouch on my belt, and can have more than one blade.

Double the length single blade, with a sheath, and it has to sit on my belt to be comfortable.

I'll take a folder...

Is there a fixed blade equivalent of a SAK?

I really like the convenience of folding knives, so I'll probably wouldn't.

I've been carrying a fixed blade and a folder all day.

Fixed: Bark River Mini Canadian.

Folder: Victorinox Cadet.

Granted, the Bark River is pretty small for a fixed blade, but still big enough to be very useful.

I'd probably always carry a folder like a SAK, but if we could truly carry anything without being hassled, I'd carry a somewhat larger fixed blade -- probably something with a 4-5" blade.

I'd never go fixed only. I enjoy the convenience of carrying a folding knife, social stigma and all aside.

However, it would be really refreshing to carry around a "big" fixed blade for certain jobs at work.

Fixed blades are usually low quality, not as fast to draw as an assist/balisong/folder, and you can't pocket them.

Wrong. I can't quite pocket it but the rest is dead wrong. I like to carry folders most of the time but now and then this one comes along.

i've recently been carrying my Recon Tanto, concealed, on my strong side hip (God bless FL) and leaving my BM710 at home.

it's a little cumbersome for detailed tasks, but as soon as my BM Nimravus arrives (in M2), i'll probably be FB full time. now, on-duty, is another deal all together. Folders are handy in LE work, being that most of my waist line is already spoken for lol

I do carry a sheath knife sometimes. I have some that go on the belt, and a couple that are my own interpretation of the Sgian Dhub that I pocket carry. My dad carries a sheath knife everywhere he's got pants on.

But I don't think that I will ever go to a sheath knife exclusively. Pocket knives are safer to carry -- the whole blade is inside a metal sheath. I've seen sheath knives slice through leather and cordura sheaths. I've seen them fall out of sheaths. I think that I will continue to always carry at least one pocket knife, and carry a sheath knife when I want to or whenever I think it appropriate. No laws need to change where I live to allow for that.

First off - my use does not include SD. It's been 50 years since the last time I was threatened with a knife and I have never had reason to consider using one for SD. I have carried some sort of folding knife for 50 years and used them daily. My EDU's get used for cutting , slicing , gouging and as hammers. They are carried because their size and weight are well worth the effort. I recently acquired a CRKT Crawford plier knife and actually did consider just carrying this knife daily - what stoped me was that i use a knife for some task or tool abuse anywhere from6 to 40+ times in a day. I am spoiled and do want a knife that opens and closes with one hand - frankly - for my own and others safety - I'd have to pay some attention to re-sheathing a fixed bladed knife ( don't want to drop one off a ladder or lift). If you consider that the knife use cycle goes from retrieval to use to restowing - a good one handed folder is just safer and maybe even quicker to put thru that cycle.
BTW - CRKT Crawford plier knife does ride in my tool kit for the big jobs - choping holes in stuff ,etc. - I like it well enough that i bought a second one to cover for when I break or lose the original. Cheap effective tool -what's not to like?

In Canada now the law on folders is really uncertain depending on what LEO you get. To some any one handed locking folder is an illegal auto knife and you are going to jail and to others it is perfectly legal. NY city has done the same thing although uses the term gravity knife. It is a cheap shot at outlawing folders without any legal or political oversight.

One reason most people have a hard time with carrying fixed blades is 95% of all fixed blades come with a garbage sheath. A really first rate sheath and a small slim fixed blade is as easy to carry and conceal as a folder. I particularly like small fixed blades either in a neck sheath or in the pocket. My Swamprat SwampWarden in a custom OST sheath is even easier to carry than a folder ,is totally hidden between 2 T-shirts and easier to access than a folder. It is also much faster to get at and stronger. A good sheath really is a must. It is really more important than the knife in many ways.

That is a very good point, unsub. The sheath tends to be an afterthought, but 99% of the time you are carrying the knife, not using it. And the sheath largely determines how easy access is when you do use the knife.

i occasionally carry a fixed blade but i prefer folders for edc, its legal to carry a FB in my state (TX) and i have 2 of the very best imho edc FB's around, a nealy pesh kebz and a amoeba w/the MASS system, but still they are a PITA to deal with daily vs a folder.

i dont worry at all about the locks failing on my edc folders, a custom emerson '13, an EKI '12 & a spyderco ti ATR, ones a custom liner lock, one a frame lock and the other a compression lock,

I'll definitely TRY EDC-ing a few fixed blades of previously illegal size -- just to try what it would feel like, and what benefits do I get. Would I KEEP carrying? It'd depend on whether I like it or not))
