Would You Rather?

One $400 knife...either a custom or a sebenza or a strider....or that new CRK that I can't spell,That knife is sweet.

I have many $100 knives (Manix, Rukus, etc) but no ZT, Sebenza, or Strider and I was just wondering if they were worth it.

I'd have to move more towards the four $100 knives than a $400 knife.

Don't get me wrong, high end semi-custom knives are a thing of beauty and I do intend to own a CRK Mnandi before I die. But given the choice between four or one, I'd take the four. Because you get more options. You can pick and choose your steel, your edge grinds, your handles, locking mechanism, etc. If you spend your entire knife budget on one knife, it may not be perfect for all situation.

These days there are a lot of very very nice knives to be had in the $50 to $200 range. They may not all be show pieces, but in that range there's some work horses (BM 710, Manix, Paramilitary, etc) and there are some very beautiful, classy, funcional knives at the same time (Queen, Case, Buck, S&M).

I look at knives as tools and my buying decisions come down to what I think I'll need and use. Every now and then I'll treat myself to that one expensive knife that I know I won't use, but damnit I have to have it.

In the end it isn't even a personal preference as much as a case by case examination of the knives available.

I sat one $400 knife as well. The quality with which they are constructed is really something you have to experience and see for yourself. I jsut recently traded for a small sebenza with micarta inlay and I traded several ~$100 knives for it and I am glad I did. The fit and finish are perfect, and if it ever gets worn out looking yo can send it on and get looking brand new again, plus the warranty is awesome as well. I say go for it! If you don't like it yo can always get your money back or trade for several productions on the forum here.

Striders are built to last a lifetime.Sebenzas are classics & built tough, plus they're a good investment. That other/newer CRK that starts with an M(I think) is just gorgeous.
Then you got your Rockstar, which is also built like a tank.
On the other hand, you can't go wrong with a Chinook III,about $125 or less. They are also built super tough.
Customs are a whole different story. It all depends on your preferences.

BTW,I would pick one $400 knife

I'd rather have 4 $100 knives.

$100 will still buy a fairly decent knife, and I'd rather have several different knives for several different purposes rather than making the $400 knife do everything.

Eight $50 dollar knives.

Stuff happens to knives. $50 to $70 is about as much as I feel comfortable spending on a knife, because that is about as much as I am willing to put at risk in my pocket working. And there are many good choices in the $20 -$50 range.

Definitely one 400 dollar knife. I'm a perfectionist. I am also meticulous when it comes to taking care of my tools/ possessions, I wouldn't have the time for eight knives. Just give me one good one, I'm a happy man. Interesting question.

If my budget for knives for the rest of my life was $400 I would get a ZT300, a benchmade 710 and maybe a Spyderco Caly 3. That way I have my heavy duty, EDC, and something in between all covered. I love my Sebenza and all but I would rather have a little more variety. All these knives would probably last as long as any $400 knife.

I am about quality, over quantaty; therefore, I would rather have 1 $400 knife.

One $400 knife. I'd prefer a Busse for a fixed blade or a Strider for a folder.

8, 50.00 dollar knives would suit me better yet. My strong suit is getting the most out of the least. Like they say, " I have done so much with so little for so long that now I can do anything with nothing." That phrase would describe my late father to a "T"

One $150 knife, one $100 knife, and three $50 knives . ;)

I have a few Buck knives on my "wanted" list, I 'need' a couple of new Scandinavian knives from Ragweed Forge, and I'm always on the lookout for interesting designs by new custom makers in the For Sale By Makers section.
