Would you rather...

i'd go for the multi-knife option.

for the cost of some high end folders, i could kit myself out with a lifetime of blades.

I would go for several knives. I enjoy variety more, and a $150 knife is 99% as good as a $400 knife. I just don't feel the extra 1% is worth $250.

I have nothing against expensive knives, but I don't feel that I can grantee not loosing a very expensive pocketknife, so I tend to buy much more affordable pocketknives. Besides, my pocketknives get used pretty hard, so when something like a Kershaw Blur or Benchmade Griptillian is high quality yet pretty affordable, well, the choice is obvious.

Now, I feel that I can keep track of a larger fixed blade knife, so I would be more willing to lay out $200+ for a fixed blade if one caught my eye.

whatever happened to passarounds? i remember way back when i signed up on bladeforums we used to have a lot of those.

i thought I wanted a sebenza until i carried one for a week during a passaround. it didn't have anything over my BM635, in fact i felt the BM had a smoother opening and better blade shape, so i've now put my sebenza desires to rest.

same with strider. i had one during a passaround, and the SnG blade was off-center, had an edge shaped like a freakin chisel, and was bulky. i liked my manix better.

chances are if you carry a high priced blade around for a few days you won't find that it has too much over most existing blades except the name

You can only use one knife at a time.

I would rather have one high quality knife to use then be forced to use one of the boat load of cheap knives I could get instead.

Quality over quantity every time for me.

Big Mike

PS - Since getting a very high quality folder all my other folders sit unused.

I'd rather have a few good knives than a Sebenza or custom or whatever other expensive knife you can name.

I would rather have a really good fixed blade and a really good folder than only one top-of-the-line knife of either type. For the cost of a Sebenza I can have either a Dozier or small Busse + almost any Kershaw, Spyderco or Benchmade I want.

There are some things that a folder just won't do as well as a fixed blade and vice-versa. Better to have one of each to start...but the sad reality is that eventually you'll own them all.

I enjoy having multiple inexpensive knives around, but definitely no cheapies that fall apart. There's no point in picking up a knife if the darn thing falls apart before I get a chance to really use it. If I can't use a knife for its intended purpose without fear of breaking it, there's a problem.

I think that once you make the jump over 130ish mark, unless you have no idea what your doing, it would be hard to not get an absolutly excellent knife. If you can get 3 all the better, but like others said, if you have the sebenza itch, nothing else will do. I felt the same way when i got a kabar instead of an esee 6. I know the esee will preform better, but im still way glad i got the kabar instead. Well, that and i got a 6 on the way.;)
