Would you walk to Alaska?

While I do not believe I'd ever try...this is beyond simply inspiring. Awesome read.

I envy these people. Looking at those pictures brings me back to the 3 week backpacking trip me and some friends took back in July in Northwestern Montana. I'd love to do it again someday.

I lived down on Prince of Wales Island in S.E.Alaska 87-89. I loved that part of the country also. To walk from the lower 48 and up here, would be one hell of a good time. Just at 51 now, ain't going to happen.

I'm 53 and I'd do it in a heartbeat. I wouldn't be clocking 40 mile days like some thru-hikers, but I'd love to take on a walking adventure.

RussMo and DaleW,

Maybe we can organize and "over 50" through hike!

Ron (at 54)

I would love to try this. of course being from New Jersey my walk would be a little longer. :D

I am seriously contemplating a move to Alaska after RN School.

I'd love to, but if I was goin' there I certainly wouldn't start from here. Mac

Wow, that's really cool. I wish I could figure out how to take enough time away from the real world to do something like this.

BTW, for anyone who hasn't looked at the link yet, or who hasn't fully explored it yet, there is some really neat modified and homemade gear on about the third page. . . Tent, life vests, clothing, etc.

I probably wouldn't simpkly because I've heard it's a major pain to bring guns into/through Canada. Don't think I'm goimng up there and not enjoying some of the best hunting around!

My intention would be to LEAVE the real world. Be nice to have a good plot of land in AK, and go there to die.

A friend of mine did the Pacific Crest Trail (2650 miles) two years ago at age 54. It took him 98 days and about 30 min. He went ultralight (of course), resupplied about every 5 days. Did 27 miles a day, every day. Started at 170 lbs. Finished at 140 lbs. The thing about doing it that applies here is timing. On the PCT, you need to deal with blistering heat in the lower portion and heavy snowfall in the mountains, which gives you a specific window of opportunity. Going Mexico to Canada (S to N) creates a larger window. Anyway, timing is something to definitely look at when hiking through northern latitudes.

This same guy just did a bicycle ride, Canada to Mexico (56 yrs old). Upon retiring from his job in 3 1/2 years, he is going to sail his boat (which he built himself and lives on in the Bahamas) around the world. He's not much of a "couch potato". In fact, I don't think he has a couch.

.

you could always take a bow and hunt that way. Get in touch with the old ways.

I think it is very cool to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and do what they are doing.
