Would You Wear a Fixed Blade On Your Belt in a Big City Environment?

Yes, I would carry a fixed blade in a big city environment because its legal in my city and state and there's no blade length limit in my state. I don't really care what anybody thinks about me carrying a fixed blade on my belt, they are just dumbed down sheep with no knowledge of the law....
you have to exercise your rights, they already took away our rights to open carry unloaded firearms in California this year.....I have seen a few people carrying Ka Bars on their hip and the police don't harass them at all.

I prefer to carry a light weight folder but I always have a fixed blade in my truck and sometimes I do carry fixed blades on my belt.

I live in mass and most of the bigger cities have blade length limits so fixed blades are mostly out of the question. When I'm in my home town I carry whatever I feel like.

If you have a use for it and it is otherwise legal then you should carry one. Fixed bladed knives can be much safer and more durable and sanitary to use then a folder. It is unfortunate that our environment limits our choices.

Why would I need a fixed blade in an urban environment? I asked myself this and couldn't think of a good reason. I always carry a small folder because it's useful, but a fixed blade seems unnecessary to me.

I carry an delica now but soon I will be an apprentice carpenter, then I'll definitely be rocking an izula, that will be in my work clothes though.

Probably not........

Oh wait, I do all the time. But I live in Central Washington. Used to live in Spokane. I did carry up to a 5 inch fixed blade occasionally.

Would I do that in Seattle????? NOPE.

Would I do that in NYC, or Chicago......nope.

I have on occasion. As long as it's in an area that's legal. The beigists already stare at me if they see a pocket clip, they'll stare all the same at a sheath. Who cares ya know? It's a mind set/preference.

I agree with this completely. Today, I had this guy on my belt...

Couple of thoughts on this.

If a fixed blade is a GOOD thing (and I think it is, because it's stronger and faster to deploy than a folding blade), then why wouldn't you want one regardless of the environment you are in, urban or otherwise?

I do carry a fixed blade on a belt, even in urban areas, but always concealed. I think it's borderline silly to carry a fixed blade in plain sight in an urban environment where there are a lot of people around. You're just going to invite unwanted attention, and if you have any thoughts of using it for self-defense, carrying it openly is hardly going to give you any tactical advantage. Personally, I carry a small blade, keep it concealed, and view it only as a last-ditch tool to use if for some reason my handgun fails. Also, there are a few occasions where I can carry a knife but not a gun (such as at my work), so in those cases, again the fixed blade carried concealed is quite useful.

This should go without saying, but I'll say it anyway: if you're going to carry a knife on a belt in urban areas, check your local knife laws. Big cities often (always?) have weird knife laws that are outdated and often inconsistent with the more open laws about gun carry.

I carry a small tanto under my shirt round my neck

Prob carrying a fixed blade in the open even if it is a tool to you people who don't know you will draw their own conclusions

If for self defense you advertising what you have and capable of giving your potential attacker an advantage over you

In CA, a fixed blade MUST be carried openly.

I'm from Germany.
Law here prohibits carrying one handed locking folders and fixed blades over 5" bladelength.
Legal:
One handed opening slipjoints (Think UKPK)
Tho handed opening locking folders (Think Buck 110)
Fixed blades under 5" bladelength (Think... well whatever)

I choose the latter.
I live in a small city of about 150,000 inhabitants and go to university daily.
I nearly always carry a small fixed blade.

When I'm going out for partying, dancing, whatever, I choose a two handed folder without clip, so I have a tool ready when needed, but don't attract unwanted attention.

FYI I'm carrying a knife as tool ONLY, no self defence purposes whatsoever

I sometimes openly carry a small FB from belt but tucked inti rear pocket. Nobody has even noticed as far as I'm aware. I've seen bikers openly carry huge flea market FB's right in downtown Pittsburgh so I know it's happening.

Whn I was alot younger I used to edc a Buck 119,or similar sized knife all the time.In todays environment,I probably would'nt.

I carry smallish fixed blades in my back pocket 100% of the time. For the record, your pal would have gotten the same warning from Texas cops about his gun rack, because it's not legal here any more, either (besides just being dumb - hey thieves, look at the neat toys you can have if you just break this window!)

I would NOT carry a fixed blade knife of any size on my belt in the city if there was any chance of it being seen . Because most city folks don't know $hit about a knife being a handy tool and they just think "weapon" even if they see someone take out a folder .

That said , I DO carry a fixed blade knife all the time . I have an Izula and a pocket sheath I made with a clip . The sheath fits inside my pocket with just the clip and the tip of the knife handle showing a bit , as it would with a folder that has a pocket clip . I do wear that in the city and anywhere else I go , but it doesn't stand out .

I will do what the law allows, if NYC said that it's perfectly legal to carry a 10 in fb with spine serrations openly on my hip or hell even strapped to my thigh rambo style then I don't give a damn what the sheeple think. If it is our right, then for God sake exercise it or we will lose it. "A tool only" Really? If you do not think of anything in your hand as a potential weapon, will you when the time comes, I dont think so. "Urban areas if I had a reason" That sounds like elitism, do you mean that people( or trades ) of a certain status should only be allowed carry rights( knife or gun). You could live in an absolute nightmare of an area, but unless you are rich, famous or a politician you are not getting a concealed carry permit. I can also guarantee you that these status elite people are the same ones fighting to get our rights reversed. If you think this is not going to happen to knives YOU ARE WRONG! The king of NYC and his DA already actively are going after knives...companies have already forsaken the city and some have taken the stance not to sell to the entire state. Think I am wrong...check it out yourself you will find the samething that I did. It is real easy to take a cavalier attitude about this when you don't live here.

Also if I could openly carry a fixed blade I would absolutely make sure it was the biggest, ugliest, meanest looking COLD STEEL I could find;)

( sarcastic about the style and size...but I do like cs )

In reality I would just carry my Graham brothers pocket Kukri. ( 3in blade pocket carry partialy concealed with a t shirt over handle). yeah it's terrifying ( sarcastic again )
