This trapper has a little sentimental value to me as it was a gift to from a friend that has since passed on. I noticed today that the scales have cracked one side worse than the other and was curious to see if I should stop carrying it.

The cracks are almost directly across from each other near the rear

Personally, I wouldn't carry any knife that isn't replaceable (i.e. sentimental value). I would say that you should keep it put away in a safe place:)

If it's an 047 Case pattern, the cracking is relatively common. I'm sure someone with repair experience will post a remedy. A tiny bit of super glue (the kind with a filler) might work.

Has DR6207 SS or DR6287 SS stamped in the secondary blade tang

Doesn't it help you remember the person who gave it to you each time you use it? Wouldn't that person have wanted you to use it? Just don't abuse it and you should have it a long time. If it gets any worse look into having it repaired. JMO

So? Are you thinking about not carrying it because it has sentimental value, or because you think it might have actual value due to its age?

Just because I don't want to cause further damage and possibly make it unsafe to me while using it. Monetary value isn't as important as the sentiment of it and he would have wanted it to be carried and used

Yeah, I would keep on carrying it in honor of your friend. If it gets to a point where you need to retire it, then so be it.

Like posted above, I'm sure your buddy would have wanted the knife on you.

I would carry it, but not as an EDC.

Just maybe as an every one in a while kinda thing.....

Knives can be replaced unless they have that kind of personal value attached to them.

I would keep it as a user, but have it as a dedicated "Events knife" (special dinners, holidays, et al). By doing this, you will keep using it, but keep the stresses low and not cause outright failure.

If it does crack further and you want it repaired. Look up his birthstone or birth tree (most month have a tree associated with them, similar to a "Birthstone") and have the slabs replaced using wood/stone from the same type of tree/gemstone as his Birth month.

This will keep the knife having sentimental ties, but tether it closer to him.
The only risk would be losing it in the mail, so if you have someone local, you may want to drop it off and pick it up in person.

Best of luck.

Good thinking there would have to find someone to do it though no body local messes with knives at all as far as repair or making them. Lots of places to buy them though

I wouldn't worry as I would just retire it to desk duty and find a similar to exact model to carry.

Hey, I sent a 1970's red bone knife to the Case factory that had a broken backspring. They fixed it, sharpened all 3 blades and polished them and entire knife and mailed it back to me! Cost? Nothing! Really! now thats customer service. You may have to pay a small fee, but they will fix or put new handles on it for you. An American knife Company.

For now I think I am gonna switch it out of the rotation and replace it with a 6318 blue bone scale stockman.
