I was looking at my Para2CamoDLC and thinking  :
  • the painted pocket clip is going to be scratched up someday
  • mildly wanting a parkerized clip
  • wishing there was a strong metal that was black all the way through so scratches won't make it look bad
  • WHAMMO . . . carbon fiber is black all the way through !
  • Are there any after market carbon fiber pocket clips ?
  • Are they any good ?
I can't resist posting just one baby picture (it's brand new).

like this?

usa knifemaker has those, and you're welcome

they're available without holes, & it seems to be the only readily available cf clip... I guess you'd have to manually grind it to size if possible, I hate messing with cf personally. Use a good mask

I don't know enough about CF to do anything but speculate. For some reason I have always thought it was a pretty brittle substance over all. Would it be prone to breakage when used as a clip? You're applying pretty constant stress and wear.

Aratech also makes CF Clips for the PM2. I prefer the stock one, but the quality is definitely there on his products.

The drawback is bending the clip to set the tension. Metal clips can be cold set by exceding the elastic limit by bending (in either direction). Carbon fiber clips need to be heated to reset the tension. Good luck!

My experience with composites is that you cannot heat mold those materials. Heat softens those materials because heat destroys the chemical bonds of the resin (epoxy most of the times). I don't think you would be able to alter the tension on those clips... but they do look good from here!

I tried one of those CF clips shown above. Found it just didn't have enough tension for my liking, a bit too flexible.

+2
These clips have almost no retention. They are too thin and not formed to provide enough force.
Recommend buying a custom sculpted CF pocket clip that will be much thicker and more durable.

I have one of those CF clips in the top picture on my Roadhouse right now. No issues so far, but at some point the clip will catch something, like every clip eventually does, and we'll see.

The clips at the bottom are great. Who makes those? The aforementioned Boomer?

Aramis Akhmedov aka Aratech. :)

Properly laid up CF would make a pretty good clip. It would be springy and strong. CF's weak point is crushing and impact strength. Crushing breaks up the cloth and impact blows the resin out. As long as you're not using your knife as a hammer or throwing it at stuff I can't see it as an issue.

Some of the clips shown look more ornamental than practical. That's the retention problem some folks have noted. Also if you have to drill your own holes there is a concern re the dust. The dust is a hazardous material.

Good point.
Luckily I'm well versed in the use of the shim.
I'm thinking thin tiny washers
Plus the thin ones would be easily flexible.
The thick Boomer one . . . well . . . what can I say . . . mostly "?" Why so thick ?

Lost a Stretch using one of those thin Knifemaker clips.

Boomer makes sculpted clips.
Got one in G-10 and it performed perfectly.

Well that answers that.
