Well, I finally satisfied my curiousity about punturing an Artery...it wasn't as funny as the old Monte Python films. It wasnt' as much blood either...as the punture happened inside my left wrist, about 2 inches from the wound. It caused not only a very uncomfortable feeling:D but it caused a large amount of swelling, otherwise known as a Hemotoma. The great news is that I didnt do it with a knife...but a 3.5" nail. Overall, it could have been worse, but my left hand is as weak as a little girls right now....my smaller second artery is carrying most of the blood into my hand, and makes my hand ache. I hope that it feels better by the CT meet. Not much to take a picture of, just a small entry hole...so no pics. Sorry, no gore, just pain:D Gene

I hope you got medical attention. People can bleed to death internally without spilling a drop of blood.

That brings back painful memories. I shot a nail into my finger with a nail gun years ago. Bled like hell. It was a really sick sensation to pull a nail out of a bone.

Hope you get better.

Your post makes me wonder if us knife nuts have more wound curiousity than other hobbyists. I have always thought, "what if I drop one of these knives and sever an artery?"

thanks guys
I went to the Hospital...I am pretty good with emergencies..I had lots of training in the Army and have seen much worse injuries on jobsites...but I have to admit, seeing my wrist puff out a golfball size lump instantly, freaked me out...I was pretty nauseous for about 30 minutes. I handle seeing other peoples injuries quite well, and the sight of blood doesnt stop me in my tracks like some Ive known. Ive seen guys pass out from witnessing injuries on the jobsite..which makes for good ammo later on. I have been around for the worst (death) and lots of gore ( a small boy run over with a tractor) and things like that can toughen you up a bit...injuries still get the heart pumping though....I actually practiced something I learned when I was in Karate as a teenager..I used breathing techniques and cleared my mind after I realised I was in mild shock. Its probably BS, but I read a bit about the samuria training to stop bleeding with his mind....that always interested me when I was a kid. I calmed down and I was fine after that..and when the doctor told me my tendons were all still in the right place.

Thanks for the update and glad you're ok. :)

One major effect of rapid blood loss is similar to hypothermia, where clear thinking, which is what is needed most, can quickly become impaired.

Glad the breathing techniques worked. It's amazing how calming some of those can be.

Heres the XRAY from GunKnifeNut when he was in the hospital.

Gene, hope you heal quickly, I've been down that path before, it happens in the blink of an eye.

Take Care,
