i think this one looks pretty cool as well.

item #2221

^ You could look up Equip 2 Endure' s Youtube account and search for the 2011 Shot Show Kabar report. Good for perspective and size reference too.

Sorry, IMO, unless they have a full width tang, they are JUNK. A stick tang is not worthy of any HD use.

... all experience in the woods or at war to the contrary. :)

tell that to the khukri people :)

oh, sure, you can break anything... but at what point is that abuse? mmm.

most humans though are not strong enough to bend a well made rat/stick tang

He has a point. I showed this to a friend in another forum who also makes knives. Here's what he thought:

This is my professional opinion. It doesn't mean it's fact.

Take a close look at the area directly forward and directly behind the guard. The blade is much wider than the handle. The handle is stacked leather washers. They have slots cut in them so they all can slide up onto the tang and butt against the guard. The guard is the same way.

Now, take a look at the cuts/grooves in the handle. The tang is narrower than those. The tang is also straight. I can tell you for sure that the shoulders (where the guard butts up against the blade) aren't very wide like they should be. If they were done properly they would be as wide as possible and they wouldn't be cut at hard angles. They would be rounded to retain as much strength as possible. Chances are it's not that way.

These blades are also heat treated by the hundreds at a time. Most high production runs are heat treated in large steel baskets that are run thru the HT furnaces. That large pileup of blades does weird things during heat treat. The outer blades may get up to proper temperature or they may not. Some may get too hot while others will not get hot enough (usually ones deep within the pile). Quenching is also a huge factor. 1095 requires that you get the temp down to a certain level within a very short time once it reaches critical temp or hardening will not be done properly. You're going to get different results with each blade. It's a gamble as to whether you get a good one or not.

The guard area is THE weakest point on that knife. If it's going to have a catastrophic failure during use then that's where it will fail.

I wouldn't trust it as far as I could throw it. Throwing it will probably break it anyway.

I find the big brother interesting, but want a Mark I a lot more. Love that little knife. Thinking that it will make a nice companion knife to my BK9. :D

you can also find info on all of kabar's new stuff, not on their site, but on tomar's kabar. They include pricing and I believe availability. Lots of good stuff coming this year from what I can tell

well ive had lots of real world experience with stick, rat tail, and full tang and what ive learned is that if you want a sharpened prybar,go full tang.otherwise the others work just as good.im digging on that mark 1 too for the exact same reason.make a hell of a backup to the 9:)

ya know, these knives probably have been tested... and they have a warranty... if they break, so what? however, not a single one is IN HAND yet that we know of, and already the FUD (fear uncertainty doubt) being thrown around and outright stated like it was fact, and not opinion. if one is going to make absolutely statements, back it up please. if one is going to state opinion, well, i'd like to see constructive arguments supporting it ;) but hey, that's just me.

i'm also curious how a round shape that fits into the square hole is stronger, since it has less material? :)
