WOW, Is This A Record Price???

I remember this, but was unable to find it in a search. I did find this, but it's not what I was thinking of:

This is that one:

That is a beautiful knife. There are only two 184's I lust after, the Damascus one above and the one's with the Ti Ni gold colored blades:thumbup:. They are the two 184's that make my heart beat a little faster each time I see them. But, they cost $$$$$ more than I can pay for them;):(.

Here is an old 184 thread that has some old auctions $$$$$$$

Hey guys, I'm a little curious about Haebbie's post that expense would be no object for someone in Russia. Why is this? I thought there was a great deal of poverty in Russia.

I used to have a 184. I bought in in 1985 I think for around $130. I gave it to a friend about 5 years later after I realized it was kind of a ridiculous knife that I would never use. I've been trying to get it back from him ever since!

The Westernization of the Russian economy after the downfall of Communism is having a pretty negative impact. Russia is going through a time sort of like America in the 1920s. There are some crooks and robber barons making huge fortunes and most of the people are very poor.

The privatization of industries after the fall of the Soviet Union created a new class of Millionaires and Billionaires. Entrepreneurs in many cases have made out very well. If someone had a mind for entrepreneurship, there were opportunities galore. For those who were used to waiting for Mother Moscow to provide for them, give them work, take care of them, things did not turn out so well. I understand Haebbie's comment well.

Haebbie's comment makes sense only if you understand that the "someone in Russia" of which he speaks is one of the very few RICH "someones" in Russia.

Wealth has become spectacularly concentrated in Russia and much of this inequality has to do with powerful and influential people being favored by the government in distribution of government assets and the accumulation of wealth from those assets.

Most Russians are living, either below the poverty level or dangerously close to the poverty level.....and don't even come close to being able to buy a $100 knife. The average Russian won't make that much in one month and will spend almost every bit of it on food, shelter and clothing......no knives.

There are relatively few very rich Russians and they indeed can buy whatever strikes their fancy.

George Orwell, in his classic novel, "1984," predicted that in 1984 Russia and America would be passing each other going in opposite directions. While he didn't get it exactly right, it is interesting to see Russia experiencing a warped version of 1900-1920 American capitalism with all the ugliest features of the system on lurid display.

The average Russian man today has a life expectancy of 58 years. Pensioners have been hit hard and the elderly are dying fast. Tuberculosis is ten times as common as in the rest of Europe.

No.....it's not utopia.

What you say BG is true. There were, however many opportunities for individuals to start up businesses without special government connections after the collapse of the USSR. One man who was a painter started a logo painting business that put logos on commercial vehicles and in two years he was a millionaire. Just one example. Another bought a Minsk refrigerator to sell in Russia and started an import/export business that now is worth millions. Another example.

There are relatively few very rich Russians and they indeed can buy whatever strikes their fancy.

True, but "relatively few very rich" against a background of 141.8 million = a lot of wealthy people. Put a couple of those cats on e-bay and we've seen the results. :D
