This is my wife's mandated oorah post.

We took out a few knives last night while I was getting the new skinner and utility/thrower listed. Looked side by side at my first blade and my latest couple-

seeing them side by side (with a few that I'm not even going to torture you with seeing) and I'm so stoked at how this year has gone for me. Wanted to get into this for 20 years!

Cool progression, I've still got most of my original knives and they follow much the same path, as I imagine most knifemakers do.

Good job, Love the thrower.

I agree very good progression, It is nice to see a first knife that looks like one of my first knives. Several of the first knife pictures I have seen here look more like my 50th knife than my first knife.

Hey Koyote,
That second one down looks a lot like my "Survival Nessmuk" that I forged out of A2! (only yours looks more purdy!)
Sorry for the lousy pics, (dang flash!)

It does at that! I was told that the first one I made (which I've been carrying) follows the basics of an old trade knife pattern (it has a slightly more pronounced clip), but I admit to thinking a bit of a thinned down nessmuk. I also wanted something that *would* throw, but that I could get a good 18 to 20 degree edge bevel on.

I was also working off of a lot of the W&S forum comments on fixed blade knife desires. if *I* was going to really go bush with it, I'd probably dip it in some of that liquid rubber tool handle stuff, but I dunno how that would sell. The leather and optional cord wrap are pretty cool and the crossed cord gives it a little beef in the hollows of the hand.

Whatever I did, I sure hit a nerve, because I'm going to be making a lot of these for people who are asking! Looking at yours I'm tempted to add a bit more of whatever you call the nessmuk "anti clip" to a larger one, say a 6 to 7 inch blade. That would get a bit heavy but sure would make the heavy chopper people happy.

Is that a convex grind? I've been very impressed with the lightly convex and modified scandi convex grinds I've been doing- not as fine for paring I guess, but really hold up well to the field.

Koyote,
Yup...it has a full convex grind, 6" blade, forged out of 5/16 flat stock A2. The HT came out excellent! It batons oak (a lot of it), then still shaves hair.
You know something, that's funny that you mentioned the plasti-dip. I just bought a couple of more cans of it, in order to coat the handle. But, it would take away from the appearance of it. And, once you start oiling the blade, after a while it starts to dissolve. I had a paracord wrap on it...it felt O.K., but it just didn't look good for some reason. It looks good the way it is, with the HT/forge black on the handle, but in cold weather, it will freeze to my hand!
Your cord wrapping looks real nice, but my hand will still freeze to it the way that you have yours wrapped...I don't know what to do regarding the handle just yet.
What steel did you make yours out of?
- Thanks

This one is 1084, worked out great.

The handle is a bit of a bother - I tend to work with gloves on a lot, which helps. And I don't want to go to scales. I'm seriously thinking of doing one with an epoxied on thin cordage wrap. maybe hemp twine, maybe just some artificial sinew type stuff (have to find it not greased up, though)

yeah, I'm going to try that out. I may try with gorilla, too- it works amazingly well with porous fibers for me.

You know, that artificial sinew is a great idea! But it comes waxed, usually. Is that what you mean when you say "greased"? I could see myself using it, only having it come out looking like a birds nest! :D Anyways, thanks for the tip.
If I come up with something, I'll let you know...I know what you mean about slabs on a forged, full-width full tang blade. Jeez!!!
