Just wondering if anybody has any thoughts on the Russell
sandbox bowie, looks like a well built knife, however it comes with a hefty
price tag ,also wondering about the steel.

DM-1 looks to be a derritive of the old Carbon V / 1095CV used by Cold Steel and Camillus, respectively.

Taken from the forums:

Time line from Paul Tsujimoto, currently Sr. Engineer at KA-BAR

Here is the correct time line:

1) Cold Steel Carbon V was first produced in the Alcas Factory (Cutco and KA-BAR) Mid 1980s, Carbon V was originally 1095CV/0170-06/50100B.
2) Cold Steel moved to Ontario early 1990s. Carbon V started out as 1095CV/0170-06/50100B but while at Ontario, Dan Maragni removed the small amount of nickel from the formula.
3) Cold Steel moved to Camillus approx. 1995. Carbon V stayed 0170-06 minus the nickel.

So I think the steel is the leftover stock from Camillus, with a special heat treat overseen by Dan Maragni.

It's a tough and time-tested carbon steel. I had an old SRK in Carbon V that I had reground and convexed. Takes a keen edge without much effort and keeps it.

For what it's worth, AG has been in the business for a damn long time and doesn't put his name on something unless it exceeds expectations. I have one of these on order:
