Wow, This Addiction Escalated Quickly!

I definitely have an addictive personality when it comes to my hobbies. When I fall, I fall hard and get way into details. Guitars, wet shaving with DE and straights, cars.... Gotta say, I didn't see this one coming.

I've carried a blade for most of my life, from a red slip when I was a kid, some wooden Bucks and then a simple little Kershaw Chive for about 10 years. Bought that Chive from a tool truck back in 2002. After a vaca with some family, I saw my brother in law's PM2 and wanted a bigger blade. I sized up a touch to a Leek and carried that for a few years.

So this year we are on vaca again, my bro in law has long since broken the blade on the PM2 and carries an Endura. We decide to go knife shopping at LL Bean in Maine. He knows blades better than me and does some research before we go. The verdict is that we will likely wind up with Boker Plus Urban Trappers in VG-10. Full trust, sounds good to me.

We each buy one. I love it, the Leek is retired. I'd still like a bigger blade and hit the web, that's where the addiction kicks in. I do some steel research and order up an S110V Manix 2 G10. It's waiting for me when I get home from vaca, and it is fantastic. I had to pull some countertops the next day and the Manix came in handy. Chipped the edge a touch, which I was ok with considering the job, but now I need a backup and a sharpener right?

So we've got:

The Boker
The S110v Manix2

Obviously needed a combi edge Delica at that point

To be quickly followed by a Sharpmaker

Then a Benchmade 550

Then a Manix 2 CTS BD1 DLC

Those Benchmade scales could be upgraded, Putman Micarta ordered

Maybe something bigger with a tough steel, Natural G10 Military M4 ordered

That's big, how about some more acceptable around the non-knife crowd, Urban K390

This all happened in less than a month. Whoa, I fell hard into this one! I have to stop looking at the shops, but the forum certainly isn't helping Maybe you know of a support group? Nah, you'll just show me more things I want and tell me to buy both when I try to make decisions

Pics to follow, just have to figure it out.

Shopping for a tactile hatchet now, how did this happen??? Need something for camping and small splitting anyway, sooooo.

Hahaha! You forgot about joining Bladeforums to have a place to occupy your time now that knives occupy your money! Welcome!

Wauw you really went hard into this.

How's the girlfriend/wife liking it? :p

She doesn't really know what is going on. Like a true addict, I try to hide it. She knows about the Boker and Benchmade, possibly the Blurple Manix. I bought a Spideypac to organize and keep it hidden on top of an armoire

Ha, true story & thanks!!!

I'm the same man. Every hobby I get into I get into it hard. Got into hunting a few years ago and knives are an extension of that. I'm keeping my addiction mostly limited to drop point fixed blades though. :D

Yea i failed at doing that.
My girlfriend saw an email about me buying a ZT 0452CF for 200$ off an other member here.

She wasn't so happy with me spending that money on a knife lol.

And i still want to get a benchmade 940-1, a WE 707, maybe a ZT 0450 as well, oh and something to sharpen, no sure what yet
Now i mention it kershaw and kizer make some nice stuff too.

I feel like that argument won't be the last

Man you hit the ground running, sounds like you need to take a step back and possibly go on a nice vaca.

If this becoming a problem step back. What works for me is to stop buying knives for about a month and the lust cease. First month (3 weeks) is the hardest. It also helps if you agree on a date when you will buy your next one.
Knives should not cause drama or bad relationship, they are to enjoy.

The big urge passes or reduces somewhat after you figure out what you like. Right now you pretty much like everything. I do too for the most part, but you'll begin to sift the wheat from the chaff. The journey is enjoyable. Are you up to it? ;)

Welcome and best of luck! The trouble with knives is they are useful and somewhat practical, so it's easy to justify getting them knowing you have a "need" for them and they won't just sit there collecting dust. I find that a good way to meter my desire to get most of the knives I see the enablers on this site posting pictures of. If I wouldn't consider using it, I usually won't consider buying it. :P

Speaking of enabling, you know you're going to need some stuff to properly maintain your knives, right? Like some good quality tools for disassembly, various oils for the pivot, better sharpener to get a nice mirror edge, .......
Sorry, couldn't help myself.

I think you nailed it. This is how other hobbies go for me. Buy buy buy, sit back and actually use what I have, then sell sell sell.

I'll find what I like and focus on the next few months I'm sure. I actually fine the BM 550 with Micarta quickly becoming my overall favorite. Funny, because when it first arrived I was tempted to return it when comparing to my Blurple Manix. Glad I knew to give it a few days. I took it camping and knew it was going to be just right with a nice set of scales.

Now, if I love the Military in M4, I could see needing a custom BM 550 in M4.....but would sell others to fund that probably.

See, at least I'm not spending any more money Plus, there is an amp in the corner from past hobbies to fund this if I can bring myself to box it up and sell it off. Sounds an awful lot like stage 3 of denial already!

Thanks for the kind words and welcome, this seems like a fun place.

Nice work. I just picked up a Cold Steel Code 4 because I'm totally digging the XHP they're using. Like Rimfire said, you'll be making some impulse buys for a while until you determine what you really like. Then again, sometimes it's really just looks. Then you start buying custom scales and low rider clips, etc...yeah. Good luck. I just hope your alias involves a Grand National. ;)

OP - welcome and no worry! Look at the bright side: you can often recoup your money on knives by selling them for 60-70% of what you paid for. Comparing to other hobbies (which often are more expensive), this is actually a pretty budget hobby.

Agreed, I think that is why I went hard & quick. Cheaper than guitars and Turbos!!!
