..and I just learned that the hard way big time. Sliced open the ring and pinky finger on my right hand just a few min ago. I hate to sound like a wuss, but I'm getting pretty concerned with my pinky, it hasn't stopped bleeding, and moving my pinky in totally impossible. Severed the middle joint of it realy good. Same spot on the ring finger, but am able to move it a bit. No medical expert here, but I guess al lthe blood is flowing out my finger (still, as I type) and not going to the top of the finger is why I can't move it - right?
C'mon dammit, clot.....crap this hurts

Go to the forking emergency room, dork! Seriously, not being able to move your finger is a bad sign. They can fix that but they have to start right away while it's fresh.

I'd better send a copy in email, too.

Jesus. Dude, it sounds like doctor time. First thing, you've got to worry about infection. Second, if you can't move it there's a possibility of tendon damage. The last time I cut myself Dr. Walt was very clear on the "time limit" for tendon repairs: you've got two weeks to get the tendons micro-surgeried back together again before the damage is permanent. I would imagine that infection could shorten this time period?

In my case, the cut was absolutely clean and the bleeding was quickly controlled. I'll admit, I *didn't* actually get any attention for it, and it did fine. But within three days I was careful to "test" the tendon pull strength to make sure I wasn't facing microsurgery, after Walt explained about the "two week limit".

In any case, I'm going to EMail this thread URL to the good doctor. Your cut sounds one hell of a lot worse than mine...for starters I didn't hit a joint. Cartilage damage or similar could be a complication I'm not qualified to even think about, on top of everything else going on.

Consider a trip to ER.

Good advice. Lost a bit of blood, had to cool myself down with a cloth to avoid vomiting. I'll consider that trip to the ER tommorow morning. Just had someone look at it, she'd suffered like 2 dozen sloces of "this level" and claims it doesn't look as bad. See how it feels in morning...

That happened to me also about a month ago..

I thought i WAS NEVER GONNA GET FELLING BACK AND I THOUGHT THERE WAS GONNA BE SERIOUS PERMANENT DAMAGE!!!

but just keep it imobilized and try buying bandades and a splint thats what I did.

Keep it away from water because that will make it re open and avoid stretching it.

I cut my middle finger and had this splint contraption on it and everyone thought I was always flicking them off.

but try gettting water proof bandades and a metal spling so you can still take a shower.

Try not to keep remaking your splint over and over, it willl cause it to re open

But just dont panic within at least a month everything will be normal you will even be able to fullly stretch it back

you probably cut the tendon thats why it is non movable.

EVERYONE TOLD ME TO GO TO THE DOCTOR AND GET STICHES but i didnt want to
I really dont think you should get stitches it is a waste of time and money plus it will leave a weird and nasty look.

Any loss of sensation or feeling is a sign of a severe injury. You need to go to the Emergency Room now. If you have damaged a tendon, especially over a joint space, this is an injury extremely likely to become infected, as the tendon and joint capsule have a poor blood supply, so white cells have trouble getting in to the area to kill the bacteria.

Get thee to the ER, right now!!

Be sure and clean off that blade, too.

I'll say it again. Unless you want to be like me and have a pinky with one joint that doesn't move anymore, go to the hospital and have them fix the tendon. If you can't move the finger, the tendon is cut.

(Actually, the last joint of my pinky finger can still move if I take my other hand and move it! It doesn't work on it's own though. I can still train with sticks and knives so I guess it's not that bad. Good thing it's the last joint that has the damage!)

More words of advice that I posted in another thread:

Still can't move it. Waiting for some Neosporin to get here. After that I think I'll head up to the hospital and have them look at it. 2 people with this injury claim it will heal itself eventually. How long eventually is I don't know 6 months on one instance...ugh)

Having no medical insurance and not a great dea lof money is what's making me hold off on the hospital, just don't really have a few hundred dollars around, and that is about what it costs to fix a seemingly cut tendon. Is that about right?

Thanks a lot for all the concern too, appreciated. Heh - Cougar called me a dork...lol

If I were to get this "fixed" do they do surgery on the finger and repair the tendon and stich it up? How's it work for those who've done it before, or those who know. How much would it cost me?
