We've all seen the wraps done on tomahawks around here.

Have any of you wrapped a more traditional axe or hatchet?

Was there any historical precedent for doing so, or was it only for small war axes and such?

There is historical precident on hawks but its mostly decorative from what Ive read and saw. Usually 1oz-2oz leather sewn up the front with decrative drops and /or tacks.Very tight, looks sewn wet and dried tight over the haft.Ive saw a hictorical kentucky pattern belt axe with a very elaborate shoulder scabbard as well..
Its kinda hard to say really. Unless they put their thoughts in writing we dont really know what they were thinking when the did what they did.
Though I have also seen rawhide on several old specimens. The mountain mans duct tape. It was used to reinforce and fix cracked handles..

I was thinking about maybe doing a wrap just under the head of my GB Hunter's axe with 1/4" rawhide for overstrike protection. But I don't know how it'd look. I was hoping someone did it so I could see if I like it before buying the rawhide and dye.
