Hi Guys,

is there something a person can do to prevent wrought iron from rusting? It looks really beautiful on a guard or pommel but if it gets handled a lot or if it is in a humid environment it is inclined to rust.

Will applying clear super glue or a sort of lacquer do the job? Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

I use a lot of wrought for frittings and I etch really deep. The first thing you need to do is make sure the etch is neutralized well. Soak the part in a little ammonia or Windex for a little while. You can then soak it in WD 40 for a while to make sure all the pores are penetrated. After it is installed on the knife, coat it really well with Ren wax and you should be ok. If the fitting is on a knife with a wood handle, I coat the fitting really well with the same tung oil or Tru oil that I use for the wood. This works good as well.

I boil it in a baking soda /water solution for 20 minutes to neutralize the etch and set the oxide, rinse thoroughly in hot running water, then oil

Good info to know. I'm getting a wi chain link this week so I will be using these methods soon.

I use Ballistol to coat things I don't want to rust and have had very good luck with it. It smells a little funky at first but you get use to it.
