Wrought iron preservation

While on vacation in Maine I scoured (sp?) the coast for all kind of stuff. Kept me busy since the stripers not biting, or just not there I am not sure, anyway.
I found some pieces of metal that appear to be old enough and have the kind of fibrous look of wrought iron. Since I am not going to use these anytime soon I think I will cut to size and put in a container with a good coating of oil.
My question is, some of it has a thick crust of oceanic crap on it.
Should I leave that there or peal away to keep just the steel?

Thanks

Patrice

It gives it more depth when the rust eats away on it.:D The WI will last a few centuries with out oil on it. But the oil can't hurt.;)

I did not now that IG, I thought that maybe taking it out of the water after so long would cause it to rust faster.
I guess I won't use oil then and remove the crap that covers it.

Thanks

Patrice

Patrice you have alot more discipline than me!!!
I'd be tearing into it just to see what I had

Well Tom, I am not sure exactly how I would go about checking what I have. I seem to remember some kind of tearing test but that's about it.
Any ideas?

Patrice

What is the size of the links? Cut the link in half, then cut 3/4 of the way through it, put the end in a vise and bent it.;)
