I have an old wagon wheel rim that I've been putting off testing to see if it is WI.

I cut a section and etched it for a minute or so and it looks layered. The pictures didn't show the layers as well as I wanted though...so I think I'll etch it longer.

In the meantime, any opinions?

Don, It looks like the real thing to me. A better way to tell is to cut it 3/4 of the way threw and bend it. If it snaps its iron. If its wrought it will bend and break but it will also have a fiberous looking grain.

I already did that Ray. It does have a sandwich break.
I think it is too. Here are some more pics after a little longer etch.

I have far more than I'll ever need. I still haven't used all the Amish Hinges I got a couple of years back.

Anyone need some? The stuff is 5/8" thick by 2" wide.

I can section it to whatever length needed:

That looks good Peter. I'm really loving the wrought iron now that I have enough to play with.

No, it's for fittings like guards and butt caps.
I'm amazed you hadn't already Bruce. Old wheels seem to be one of the best sources for it these days.

I'm going to finish HTing a blade today of wrought iron San Mai with a 5160 core. I've done a couple different variations of this. As long as you don't have WI on the edge your OK.

Cool looking stuf Don
I didn't realize it etched like that, do you have any idea how far
it dates back to?

If you haven't already sent me an email Larry, please do so. I'll be happy to send some to you.

Everyone that has emailed me so far I've tried to reply to but as usual, I have problems this week.
My wifes mother is in very bad condition and may die any time. I spent the entire day in the hospital today and expect I will have to tomorrow also.

If I'm a little slow returning email, that's why.

I ain't having much fun this year either.
Don

as per My mail Don all the best to her, you and yours..

Prayers sent for your family, Don.

A while back I passed an old junk pile next to a farmstead, and noticed a whole bunch of what appeared to be old wagon wheel rims. I suppose they could have been barrel hoops too; I didn't take a close look. Maybe I'll have to drop back by & see if I can have some. Would be cool to have some wrought iron to play with.

A week or two after I burnt the shop and barn down I went to my favorite second had store. There were 4 wagon wheels there at 12 bucks each. Think they may have even been 5' ones. I just let them slip threw my fingers. I called a week later and they were gone. Been kicking myself ever since.

Don, Sorry to hear the bad news.
