Holy Frag! That is a serious piece o' steel!

I wanted a knife that was actually capable of doinf the things that were done in the hunted. Those pics were right after I got it. It now has a paracord wrap on the handle a lanyard and the steel has been mirror polished.

visionsect,
Yeah, as soon as he shoots me an email with mine and some of his others, I'll get them up for you to view. Maybe a couple of days or so. Thanks.

Ditto on wanting to see the photos of your knife Tracker, I had a little grinding done on mine as well, see the tracker re-gound posts.

ml100...THANKS A BUNCH!! The pic of your WSK was awesome. Is that the Shanz WSK? Very nice looking piece and I would love to own one myself.

I think a lot of people assume the TOPS knife has serations on the top for sawing... infact the top of the TOPS Tracker is designed to Thatch wood, in a survival situation nothing has to be sawed.

The top of the TOPS Tracker has proved great in thatching wood for traps it creates a uniform cut that has perfect angles.

I've had my TOPS knife for over 3 years now and have used it from chopping down trees to making a bow drill. It chops and slices great. I woulnd't trade it for the world and every other knife I've seen out there that has a similar design is just a copy cat.

Too bad Tom Brown isn't as internet savy as most of us, or he would be pretty upset about all the copies out there.

Here's a pic of my tracker looking relatively new (wish it looked like that now)
next to my friends "knife" if you can even call it that.

Thats a tree I cut down for a shelter, it took me about 10 minutes w/ minimal effort using my Tracker

Right. Beck was just a copycat off of the TOPS design.

Have you failed to notice the differences between the Beck original and the TOPS rendition? Do you wonder why the Beck has a more emphatic quarter rounder and deeper grinds?

Right, one can only find out these things on the Internet. He'd never see other implementations at his survival school! No student has ever brought one! Here's a hint: Ask Myakka on this forum about Brown's reaction upon seeing his Linger WSK.

I see a lot of negatives about the paratraxx, etc.

just curious how many people have actually owned one?
and
how many people would be singing it praises if the price on it was 400.

My real problem with it is splitting the tang in half to fit the mini-knife.

:D ROTFLMAO :D

True... SO true...:D
I have been tempted myself, just to see what something like that feels like, though of course the balance between models is totally different, but I just cannot really get a grasp of what this type of knife is like from the pictures... I wish HI would make one... Just to see what they would come up with...

Oh! Knowing Tom's unassuming and reticent personality..... ;)

well, I'd like to hear THAT story! :D

Yes, I have spent the last few hours searching this forum for a posting about it, but have not found anything yet...:(

Hey Myakka, tell us about it... Or, post a link to where you did tell about it...

Tom Brown spoke very little with his students during our breaks at the standard class I took in Florida last year. A local TV news channel wanted to interview a local person, and I happened to be in the right place at the right time. Because of the interview, I got some one on one time wih Tom Brown. I showed him the Roger Linger WSK knife and asked his opinion. Tom held it and studied it, checked its balance and said it was a very nice knife and very similar to the David Beck and Billy's Dad's versions. He handed it back to me and that was the end of the conversation. I later showed it to Tom Brown III "Tommy", Tom 's son. Tommy really liked it and told me one of the other instructor's father made a version of that knife for some of the tracker students. Both Tom and his son seemed impressed with the knife but did not seem concerned that I had a local knifemaker create another version of his original knife. Most of the Tacker students had with them the TOPS versions of the Tracker knife and Scout blades.

Here are the orignal drawings of Tom Brown's Tracker and Scout Blades

From what I have read neither Tom Brown or TOPS have expressed any concern over custom makers making a few 'Tracker' style blades. Their real concern is the inevitable knockoffs coming from China, etc, by the Thousands. Especially if they try to pass them off as superior to their licensed version.

I just love that gut hook placement on the Tom Brown Skinner sketch, just the right location to slice your finger off!

It's interesting to see such a revival of the WSK style. I remember way back when Dave Beck was first making them, they were a lot cheaper and he had said he wasn't selling that many. He would lay a few out on a blanket with his other knives and tools, and people would look at them, but buy something else. I always thought it was a cool design, wish I could still get an original Beck version.

I ended up selling my Beck WSK on Ebay and got $1600.00 for it. Not bad considering it was used. Nice little return on my investment. I still have 2 Becks that I designed so they're one of a kind and those will never be sold.

lotus 1972, cool!. The stuff in the movie is still pure fantasy. In a general way they admit it, noting in the special features section that reality often took second place to the needs of the production, which is as it should be in a movie.

Phil, my point was that I assume you can tell a phony knife when you see one. I don't imagine we disagree on that point.

It seems Dave Beck was the one that got screwed with the WSK fiasco.
