Just wanted to make other knife makers aware of my dealings with WSSI. I don't want what happened to me to happen to others. However I do know it has happened to others and I'm not the only one.
A buddy of mine and myself cut up a great manitoba maple burl to send to WSSI for double dye/stabilizing. My buddy and myself packaged up 33 blocks of manitoba maple and 16 blocks of caragana. We had 49 blocks total and we both tried to get the 50th block in box but couldn't. I marked the bottom of cardboard lid with 49 on it, took a picture and taped it shut very well. I sent this off to WSSI. I received a parcel back from WSSI and all it had was the 16 pieces of caragana and no burl. After numerous attempts to contact Mike I finally got a hold of him and asked what was going on with my maple blocks. He checked his paper work and said that he never received any burl from me and that i only sent him 16 blocks of Caragana. I argued with him for quite some time but he basically called me a liar. I was able to contact Mike about 6 months ago and see if he found my wood yet and he forgot who I was and said he will check it out when he got back to his office and contact me back. He stated that he wanted to make things right. He never returned a call. I tried once again to contact him but he would not answer his cell phone or office phone and would not return my calls. I finally got a hold of Mike by using another cell phone so he wouldn't recognize the number and he answered. He said he never found the wood but offered to send me back 17 blocks of wood ( not dry and unstabilized ) if i agreed to pay half the shipping. I told him that was unacceptable and that was the end of our conversation.
I hate to call anyone out on a public forum but I've been asked by a couple people to please let others know so others do not have this same problem.
Thanks
Jim Clow

Did you send him the picture you said you took? That should provide some indication that validates your claim to him.

Yes I did. Never made a difference. He said because I sent 49 blocks doesn't mean he received 49 blocks. Mike said that every package that arrives at his shop is inventoried. And if there is any damage to packaging it is documented on paperwork. He says that there was on 16 blocks and that there was no damage to package.

Ouch,

Is this the place you are talking about?

thanks

OUCH!! That's gotta hurt BB!!
I sent an e mail letting him know about your thread.
Hopefully he'll stop in.
Hard to believe the guy would just rip you off like that.
Hope you get squared away brother!

You receipt for shipping should have a weight on it that would represent 49 rather just 16 blocks. You don't have much recourse though other than making it known and the possible peer pressure from people here.

Have you looked into the possibility CBP had to destroy the untreated wood as it was looked at as a threat to the native environment

I don't have shipping receipt anymore as this has been going on for a few years. I agree I have no recourse and did not accept his offer to send me back 17 blocks of his wood. I clearly understand and accept that I cannot prove he stole the wood or misplaced it or was confiscated at border. After discussing with others lately about my dealings with Mike, it came out that others had the same issue as me in the past and one fellow has an issue With Mike at this time. Thats is when I was made aware of this feedback subforum and was requested that I post my issues to let others know.

Would they really only confiscate part of your wood at the border?

Jim this sounds very frustrating. Were all of the blocks marked with your initials in whiteout? The only thing I can think of, is maybe they were misplaced and sent to another customer.

I've dealt with Mike at WSSI before. He's definitely hard to get ahold of, but he's treated me well before.

This is exactly what had me confused also Goose.
Or, would Mike just say part of what was sent was missing?? If he was a thief, wouldn't he just take it all and say nothing showed up??
Weird just hearing one side.
Mike answered my e mail rather quickly and had some interesting things to say.
He will be here soon to address this, let's just say there is another side to this story.

I thought i was the only one seeing it but it would be nice to clear things up.

Yes all blocks were marked with whiteout.

Damn Jim that's rough to hear, and shipping from our side of the border isn't cheap either! I was just thinking today about the wood I need to send away when I have more discretionary funds not allocated. Hope things make an unexpected turn around.
