I have a customer that has requested Amber Stag on a knife. The scales need to be 1 1/2" X 4 3/4" minimum.
Anyone have a pair they would be willing to sell or can anyone point me in the right direction.
Thanks
Steve

Question here please: amber stag is really carved and dyed bone. Yes?

No, Amber Stag is real dyed Sambar Stag, Culpepper also does a dyed jigged bone that resembles amber stag. Not the same.

I was just there two days ago and could have looked for you.

I will say that there weren't many sets in this size category, and none that met my criteria. *However*, it's pretty obvious that they weren't fully restocked/unpacked from Blade Show.

I'll probably be back there in a few weeks, so if you're not in a huge rush, send me a PM and I can check for you.

I will say though, that there is *very* little stag on the market 1.5" wide or larger anymore, that's even remotely flat, so it's slim picking. I did notice a couple of larger sets of what they call "Campfire" stag which looks somewhat similar to amber, that isn't dyed, but is lighter colored.

How well matched are you expecting, and how flat?

Well, I am doing a Loveless style New York special for a customer that is flying in to the Canadian Guild show in Toronto in August. I will need a fairly nice set for this. If I can't get them he will take ironwood burl instead but I really prefer the amber stag.
Thanks for all the help so far.

Hi Steve,

The Culpepper people said the stag they had at The Blade Show was all they had and they're not expecting to get anymore in the near future.

They had no decent set in the size you are looking for.

It's not looking good for the stag supply going forward.

Take care

Charles

Hey Charles, I heard what they said there also, and I think it was taken out of context. They have quite a lot of unworked stag left, but they no longer have any more potential future supply. They told me specifically that they've got enough to last a couple of more years, but the jist is the same. Buy stag while you can.

In fact they just dyed another batch of amber right after blade. FWIW. Although yes, there isn't much if any in that size category.

Get on the phone and call JS Culpepper Supply. They tend to list these as 1911 gun handle scales on eBay.

I am making two knives for a customer who has requested sambar stag scales on both of them. They are full tang knives (one is a Loveless style hunter) which require scales that are just over 1.5" x 4.63". I bought a first piece on eBay last week, and then emailed Culpeppers to inquire if they had anymore available. They replied that they did and that they would be listed on eBay the next day. I bought that set too.

This large size of sambar stag antler with desirable or straight patterns, little or no pith, and uniform thickness is hard to find even without considering the fact that these pieces have not been imported for many years.

Keep in mind that scale sets in this size will cost a significant amount of cash.

A package of really nice Amber Stag showed up today. The fact that it got to me is why I love living in a small town. The name was wrong, the address was wrong, the postal code was wrong. BUT the ladies at the post office know that weird stuff coming from around the world is probably for me. So they asked me to check it. Now comes the other part of the problem, customs decided to open the package and obliterated the senders name and address so I don't even know who sent them to me. I am assuming it was in answer to this request which is why I am replying here. If you sent them please let me know how many pairs were in the package and how much you want for them. I can't really use them until I know what they are worth.
Thanks
Steve
