I hadn't been to my land since August, so I went out today just to make sure no trees had fallen on the driveway and to clear out some of the tall grass where we will be camping next weekend. Fortunately, no trees had fallen on the driveway, but there was a dead one close to the campsite, so I decided to chop it down. Unfortunately, I ran our of chainsaw gas before I finished limbing the tree. On the plus side I had a couple knives with me.

I know, I made the back cut too high, it still went where I wanted it to go though.

I did some chopping with both the BG WTF and the NMFBM as well as some batoning. The WTF has the factory edge, but I put a 19 degree edge on the the NMFBM recently and it's screaming sharp with the shoulders knocked down a bit. Both performed very well with what is some very hard wood.

Next I moved onto some pretty thick vines, and wow did the WTF really shine! It sliced through 1" thick vines like they weren't even there, and made quick work of some thicker ones.

I couldn't go without taking a picture of Breavis's favorite stump.

Also, it's worth noting that WV fights back, there were lots of prickers!

It was a fun day, and I'm really looking forward to spending next weekend camping out there!

Next weekend we might chop this tree down as well. It's been dead for a while and will give us plenty of firewood for the weekend.

Nice! My wife and I are thinking about buying some land like that! One more duty station and we get to retire back to TX then land in the mountains somewhere! Then I can have fun like this

Beautiful pics! Wish I'd known about this trip in years past, as I lived in Morgantown the last 5 years prior to moving down to Florida. I miss those views daily! Enjoy a beautiful weekend

Thanks buddy!

Nice!! Great pics, can't wait to see more after next weekend.

I really wish you were coming, you will be missed!

how does the wtf compare to nmfbm for chopping?

That's still a bit difficult for me to say with certainty, because I have only limited time using the BG WTF. For the really hard wood the NMFBM was pretty competitive with the WTF, but that is likely only because the I knocked down the shoulders and put a super sharp edge on it, whereas the WTF has the factory edge (which is still a pretty darn good edge). For the softer stuff the WTF is a beast. It chops through things in one swing that the NMFBM cannot. After swinging the WTF a couple dozen times it does wear on you though, it is definitely much heavier and more fatiguing. Next weekend I'll do some more chopping comparisons, including with the MOAB.

Awesome pics man!! I'm keen to get my WTF out for a serious chop sesh.

Thanks Rob, I'm very interested to see what you think of it.

It is wonderful having a place in the woods to go visit. My problem now is that I don't have the time to get out there as much as I would like. That view in your pic is pretty amazing! I'm guessing you may need to move out west a bit to get a view like that though. I love the views in WV, but there are not snow capped mountains to view (except in the winter time). My land actually got 48" of snow during a single snow storm last year, that is absolutely crazy. I wish I had been out there to see it.

This is actually the view from some land I'm hinting to my wife that we should get in Colorado! 35 acres attached to federal land so plenty of space to go play with all my toys!

thanks zmbhntr. hopefully you let us know how the next chop session goes.

Even though the group INFI camping trip got postponed, I still was able to spend the day in the woods with my wife, my son who just turned 3, and my daughter that just turned 1. I was able to spend a pretty good amount of time doing some direct comparison chopping between my BG WTF and my MOAB. I chopped through quite a large sampling of different thickness wood, most of which was quite hard. Both knives still have the factory edge, but pretty soon I'm going to want to work on the edge on my MOAB some. Unfortunately, I don't have any videos or even pics of the actual chopping, but you can take my word that there was a good amount of it. To make a long story short, the BG WTF is a great chopper, while the MOAB is an epic chopper. How the MOAB feels chopping is unlike any other knife I have ever used; everyone should try it. Both blades can take a massive bite out of a log, but the MOAB can definitely bite harder. Also, the MOAB tended to stick a bit less than the BG WTF, which was nice. Of course neither is very practical, and the MOAB costs significantly more than the BG WTF, but to me it's worth it. At the end of the day, both are a ton of fun to use around camp.

As much fun as I had chopping today, I had even more fun with my family. For the first time ever my son took a huge interest in knives. Having just turned 3 he is too young to use a real knife, but we gave him a green plastic butter knife that he wouldn't let go of all day. He went around everywhere trying to chop stuff up with it, it was great to watch! It's a bit tough to see in the pics, but he has the plastic knife in his hand in the pics.

How did the WTF Bg stack up to the newer/thinner run MOAB?

The only MOAB I have is the "skinny" version, so that's the one I did the comparison with. I personally really like having the "skinny" version, it's a bit more manageable while still being plenty thick for my needs.

That is awesome
Glad you got to get out, looked like a gorgeous day, your boy is getting big!
I got to go back home to Utah for a few days last week and took my son to BladeHQ. Got him one of those plastic lock backs, he wouldn't put it down.
Hope to see you again soon brother.

Thanks brother, hope to see you soon as well! When you are back in town for any amount of time we should meet up for a beer.

Looks like a great time and there's no question who that little guy belongs to. 😃

When my older son was about 2, he was always going to the kitchen and grabbing butter knives to pretend. I took a old Buck cross lock and ground the edge and point off for him. He carried that thing clipped to his pocket for a long time. Then his young brother did too!

I've not chopped anything really, with my WTF BG yet. I did kill a water mellon.

I hear yea ---- if I may pick your brain, how close in performance was the WTF BG? Is one more comfortable to swing/control? :) thanks in advance --- cheers!
