WWII Fighting Knife Resto-Advice Needed

looks even better now, I think I am going to do a small wooden handle and then have it wrapped in paracord. Most likely this will either live on my boat or in the camping gear. Even got a nice little edge on it now

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but looking for some experts advice. Here is my fathers father's (died before I was born) WWII M3 Fighting knife, or at least that is what I have come up with, the knife has no markings anymore, I guess it could be a something else but I highly doubt it. Anyways, been in a tackle box for about 30+ years, I took a couple years ago from my dads tackle box wanting to do something with it but just have the time now. Looking for direction, the blade is dull, rust everywhere, sheath is missing snap but most of all I would like to put a proper handle on this. could on be retro fitted?

Use Loctite Naval Jelly with a steel wool, and a steel gun brush or golf club cleaner for abrasive. Flush it with rem-oil and K1 Kerosene and repeat. That will get rid of all the rust/oxidation. Then finish with lightly rubbing 1000grit wet/dry with flitz metal polish. Get one of those bits that removes stripped screws: http://local.sears.com/Craftsman-pc...151000P?st=1110&sid=IDx20141117x00001xlpla#!/ and drill a tiny hole in the pommel pin. Use the screw remover to remove. If this doesn't work, drill the pin out.
Buy some micarta or untreated rawhide leather and a leather punch to make stacked leather spacers or canvas micarta. Maybe two or three alternating stacked canvas micarta colors?? Use a rat tail file to finish the spacers' tang hole to a rectangle, and epoxy together. Use C clamps to compress the spacers together, then belt sand a rough shape. (1 or 3 inch sander) Hand finish. Apply two or three coats of Sno-Seal to the leather.
This should turn out great. Ideas?
You might consider using a treatment on the metal like Parkerizing, or duracoat. Maybe Blueing if there isn't pitting.
