WWII issued knives

The army was issued machetes in CBI Theater. This, referring to Merrill's Marauders, is from Gerald Astor’s book THE JUNGLE WAR Mavericks, Marauders, and Madmen. On page 170 it says:

“The 5307th engaged in joint maneuvers with Wingate’s forces. The Gurkhas showed off their heavy curved-bladed knives, which seemed an improvement on the machetes that they had been issued. The supply officer for Galahad managed to procure a generous number of the Gurkha cutlery…."

So, even British khukuri were issued to US Army troops, at least at the unit level on one occasion. Take care.

Talking with my uncle today he said grandad talked a lot about colonel "Paddy" Flint, and how looking back he was proud to be in the 39th...but at the time he was pretty sure the AAAO stencil on his helmet was going to get him killed haha (he was quite the joker)

I knew Col. Flint's wife, daughter, son in law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as my mother was a close personal friend of his daughter and only child, Sallie (Junior). They were from Newport, Vt.

I am in contact with the grandson. If interested, contact me b/c.

I have an old Western Shark with the bakelite pommel. It was made during WWII when aluminum was limted and restricted. During my research to determine whether or not it was military issue, I came accross this website with a wealth of info. It discussed my specific knife and many others. Hope this helps you too: http://www.usmilitaryknives.com/knife_knotes_12.htm
