It seems as if the 4th hole was for a larger pin???? Im thinking a weight, to balance out the feel a bit? can't wait to see it with new handles!

There were 3 pins in the handle. 2 you can see and 1 I removed. The fourth hole in the handle was a lanyard hole from what I can see in older images. Plus the plastic isn't recessed for a pin like the other holes. There is a 4th pin in the rear talon but my caliper tells me its the same as the other 3.
 
Another viewer who is glad you did not remove too much of surface. The pits and marks give it great character. Just knock back the rust, re handle it and use it like it owes you money.
