Typically, the main difference between an 18" and 16.5" (all subject to khuk variations and mood of the kami of course) is that you generally get about +/-1/2" more blade and +/- 1" of handle on the 18" version. It doesn't sound like much, but it really changes the dynamic of the khuk.
For me, being an average height and build 5'10 175# on the athletic side, I like the 18" model. It gives me plenty of heft to do whatever I need to do, and the long handle lends itself to a number of great grips.
Conversely, our late great moderator Rusty was really keen on the 16.5" version. Rusty was a scrappy 5'4" dynamo (God rest ya). For his build, the 16.5" just fit him better.
