Hey everyone,

A couple of weeks ago I got out in the woods by my house for a bit of cross country skiing. There's nothing too special about the terrain, but there had just been a storm and a few flakes still coming down; it was absolutely beautiful out.

I'm using a pair of Fischer skis and my Black Diamond trekking poles equipped with snow baskets for the winter (first photo, the pictures are in reverse chronological order).

Nevermind the title "Valentine's Day Hike"... I may upload those pics later in a separate thread. Later this week I hope to get into the forest and play with my knives... there will be photos :)

Cool man! XC skiing is the only way to go in the winter - I can cover ground almost twice as fast on snow as I can hiking in the summer!

What setup are you running there? Are those the NNN-BC bindings I see or what is that?

I have just picked up a new pair of boots - the Salomon X-ADV 8s - and now I'm looking for new skis to drive with them.

I am used to some straight-for-the-skate Jarvinens but I am thinking I want some more backcountry oriented skis, possibly as wide as old-school telemarks (thinking sort of 88-68-78 sort of thing.)

I am just tired to death of step-turns all the time and it's so hilly here it's sometimes tough to regulate your speed without living in snowplow...

Cool pics!

I'm sorry to say that this is just a beginner setup and I couldn't even tell you what the bindings are... I'll go and check soon though. I know the boots are made by Salomon and they're extremely comfortable. I only XC ski a couple of times per year, unfortunately, but it really is a blast. The problem is that I don't have very much time and if I get the chance to go on a big trip, I'll head up to the mountains rather than cruise around on skis. I'd definitely like to become proficient at them though. So long as the terrain is mild, they're WAY better than foot or snowshoes for speed and efficiency.

The International Archery Federation is working on a combined nordic skiing / shooting sport which would be a blast. Maybe I can get involved with it at some point.

Don't be sorry...you are XC skiing! If the boots are Salomon then the bindings are SNS or SNS-BC...if the boots have a big chunky hiking sole then the bindings are SNS-BC (bc = back country) and if not then they are SNS bindings...both good system bindings.

It's cool to see someone else here out XCing their way around the wilderness.

Wait til that's not enough for you and you start looking at climbing skins etc...you will not believe how many places you can get to on those things!
