So, I was at the school forge a few weeks ago and a gentleman came in with a bucket of used farrier rasps to donate. We never turn down free steel especially some nice large high carbon stuff for the beginner knife makers. A lot of bladesmiths have started out with car springs and old files and made some impressive knives from them.
I couldn't resist, I had to cut a couple up and make a few myself.......
The heavy rasp side of the file was forged flat and gave a nice texture
Heat treating done in digitally controlled equipment and double tempered
No Rockwell tester readily available but a file skates on the edge and some 2x4 chopping did not chip the edge
Flat grind
Dyed curly hard maple handle
Overall length: 8 1/2 inches
Blade:3 7/8 inches
Leather scabbard with a belt loop
