This is my latest of this style construction. The steel is 80crv2. Like some nightmares, it can be accomplished once you overcome your fears. It's not easy, but then again, it's not too difficult with some practice. There is some filing to do to remove burrs and to straighten edges along the way, mostly to speed things up and to refine the subtle lines. Other than brute strength, a knife like this doesn't have much going for it except lines and subtleties of flow. There is where the challenge lies. When this can be accomplished with bare necessities, I believe it helps me to understand the conventional knife that has full dimension and volume much better.

Another challenge with such a radical approach is to maintain physical balance without sacrificing strength or hand comfort. This design allows that very well. The balance point is about 3/4 inch in front of the guard.

I would imagine that this design will be nothing more than a curiosity for some. But I encourage you to handle one if you get a chance and see what you think.

These X-Rhea blades you've been doing are really cool. I doubt I'll ever hold one, but I would love too. They look great and the skill shown is just awesome.

After thousands of years of knives being made it's hard to find new areas of innovation. You have done it. Great looking knife.

I want one. Seriously innovative Lin. The absolute epitome of "Less is more."

can't help but think how neat it would look with something filling up the inside of the handle.
don't get me wrong, though, it's pretty damn neat looking as it is!

I would welcome the opportunity to chop with one - perhaps Ryan or others who have can share their thoughts?

A wonderfully innovative design.

If i can afford, Bowie Lin's perfect like that, the innovation that is the skeleton handle that intreloque but happy eyes ... all is to perfect consistency:D

Thank you sirs.

Bruce, It would be cold to the hand for sure. As would most tools that are hand held that are metal.

Lorien, I see Pine Cones, Corn Cobs, and Armadillo tails used as knife handles but I have yet to use them. It's all filler, after a point anyway.

The idea of my knife here is to use one material, one piece of steel to make the entire knife. In the event a knife has to be made with one piece of steel, can it be more than a leaf spring with an edge ground on it and a rag wrapped around it for a handle? I would hope so.

I challenged myself, yes, I actually said to myself "make something that compares to a conventional knife from one piece of steel." I experimented with just how much, or in this case, how little, one has to have in the hand to feel sufficient and serve as a functional handle. Remember, I said sufficient, not perfect. That said, I am finding that with certain areas of the hand in contact with the handle, some areas are not so important to the ergonomics while in motion and use.

I need to know things. So, the way I find out for myself is to try.

Exemplary Hammer Skills

These two quotes captured my thoughts exactly.

"Master" Smith in every sense of the word. I've said it before Lin.....your forging skills are beyond impressive.

I have had the opportunity to cut with one of the X-Rhea bowie and was absolutely impressed. The balance is spot on, the handle is comfortable enough to really put all you have into each cut and not feel like your going to get sore spots. Of course it bites deep and cuts ooutstandingly.

Thanks guys. I certainly understand anyone being skeptical at first. But when you hold it, you will know what I'm talking about. I plan to have at least one on my table at the Blade Show for you to look at and handle.

It chops great, functions great. No vibrationeed in handle when bearing it in the wood. Fantastic design. Very innovative.

Just food for thought, all you guys that hunt, fish, surcivalists, etc. This here is your indestructible knife. It's only enemy is rust which is for all knives
