X1, X5, Surefire or Streamlight?

If you can find one, nothing beats the "cool" factor of the sterile X5T-HA. I've got one tucked away for emergencies.

That said, for a "main" light, you've got to consider how much light you need and how far you want to throw it. X5T is a great light, but it's not so great if you're trying to spot what's out in the back yard rustlin' around in the weeds. Without getting into extremes and modified lights, incandescents will throw better than LEDs in the average price range.

If you want to have a little bit more throw to compliment your Peak, go with something like a Surefire G2. If you'd like a little bit more flood as compaired to throw, go with an X5T. Sizewise, I can carry either of these lights with no problems as far as comfort.

If you wanted a little bit of both worlds, the Surefire A2 is my favorite. .

If the Inova was regulated, and could keep the initial level of brightness for a good time, I might like it better, but I believe it goes to half brigtness in about 4.5 hours, not much longer than the 3 or so hours of the Peak. I understand that the Inova has a much longer runtime, but most of that is well below initial brigtness, which makes me prefer the Peak.

For what it's worth.

1. Small light : Arc AAA (5 hours or so and steady decline)

2. Medium light: 1 watt Dorcy luxeon 3AAA. (about 25.00) - lasts a good 1.5 hours, and then takes many more hours to decay.

3. Large light (home): 4D MAGlite with an EverLED insert.

Breathing new life into a dying thread....

Thanks for all the great suggestions on lights. After thinking about it more, I really looking for something with more throw/distance. I'm not as concerned about close-up lighting. From what I can tell, Surefire seems to be a good choice for something like that.

Any suggestions on how many Lumans to be looking for?

Thanks again for helping a novice.

If it's throw you're after, check out the site here:

http://www.flashlightreviews.com/features/output_vs_throw.htm
http://www.flashlightreviews.com/features/chart_throw.htm

I don't know how to convert to lumens etc, but there is an explanation on the site as well, and all of the lights are tested the same way, so _relative_ throw should be correct.

This way you can just start at the top and work your way down the list until you find one you like and can afford.

You will find reviews on all the lights at this site too.

Enjoy!

As far as the question of carrying an X1, X5, Surefire or Streamlight goes, well, the only one I don't carry is the Streamlight.

I EDC the Inova X1 and X5 as well as the SureFire E1e and E2e.

I have a drawfull of lights including several each of SureFire, Inova, Streamlight, Photon, MagLite, Pelican, UK, Buck, etc. For a more powerful general purpose light as you' ve stated, I' d go with the Surefire G2 (about $35) for a high lumen output of 65 and economy reasons, the full size Inova T-2 (about $50) for a high quality LED with good burn time or a Surefire E20 (about $75) for a good compromise of compact size, power output (25 lumens) and burn time (2.5 hours). Again, for GENERAL PURPOSE use, I prefer the SF E20, which unfortunately will be chopped from their lineup for 05'.

I am not impressed with any flashlights under 120 lumens....they all the same to me and I would recommend getting the least expensive

once you compare lights with 120 lumens or more, think rechargeable batteries ;)

I ordered a Surefire G2 and E2E Executive Elite today. I almost ordered an Innova X0, but then found what I thought looked like good deals on the Surefires. I got them through www.lapolicegear.com. The G2 comes with 6 extra 123 batteries in addition to the 2 included with the light! My thought is I'll carry the E2E and keep the G2 in either my bag or in the truck.

Thanks again for all the advice. I may still end up getting some more (after the credit card is cleared up again)
