I love my XD .45 I want to get an XDm I cant decide between 9mm and .40, Part of me says go with the .40 you have 1000's of rounds of it laying arround and you would need to buy 9mm, but part of me is going HOLY CRAP 20 rounds of 9mm in a reasonable sized pistol!!

I need help (in more wys than 1;))

I would go with the .40 personally. 9mm is a little cheaper, but it really doesn't matter if buy in bulk. Most LE where I'm from carry .40 so I figure if it's good enough for them...

I'd go with the 40. If you hit a BG with one of the first shots, you're less likely to need the others. If you decide to sell it some time, it will probably be easier/more valuable. Plus, you won't have to take grief from your friends!

For casual and fun shooting, the 9mm is cheaper.

For carry? 40 cal. has long since proven superiority.

For Concealed Carry? This gun's a little big, unless you have alienated a lot of people and plan on needing all them bullets.

It's not the weight of the gun, it's all that lead you got inside of it.

I'm holding out for an XDm in .45. If I had to choose between .40 and 9 I'd go with the .40. But I like big bullets.

do you shoot one better than the other?

if not, you cant go wrong with the bigger bullet.

I shoot my Glock 23 well, 9mm shoots nice, but i do like the bigger bullet, I love mt .45's

Using good defensive ammunition there is so little difference between terminal performance of the 9mm and the 40S&W that it is a moot point to make a choice based on that. I shot one of the 40s, even borrowed one for a competition...it shot fine but I would have been a touch faster with a 9mm more than likely.

Having a good supply of ammo for the 40 is a point in it's favor but only a small one. I don't know how much you shoot but for me 1000 rounds of pistol is less than a months worth so I would have to buy more anyways and 9mm is cheaper. I would suggest going to a range that has rentals and try them both if possible and buy the one you like the best.

as far as bullet/calibre performance goes with good ammo (ie speer gold dot, w-w ranger or rem golden sabre to name 3 brands) all the service calibres are good and perform a lot closer than some folks think, if you do your job the <fill in the blank ie 9MM, 40, 357SIG, 45ACP> will do its job as well as any handgun will.

if ya have to use ball ammo i would go with a 45ACP, followed by the .40, with the 9MM being in last place.

but if ya can use/get good ammo flip a coin or if ya like larger capacity go with 9MM.

being you already have ammo get the .40 but you should just go ahead and grab both being they are such sweet pistols.

Beleive me if I could buy both I would and my wife would say why the hell did you buy 3 of the same pistol

I picked the .40 myself. I've heard to many bad things about the ballistics on the 9mm.

She, thank god is not a shoe person, but without a wedge and a hammer, you couldn't fit a single solitary item of clothing in her closet. I think I will go with the .40 but I am trying to get my dad to do the 9mm

My first choice would be .45, second would be the 9 and .40 comes in last. all are good rounds and will do the job to a large extent it comes down to bullet selection.for instance a 9mm 115 jhp +p will out perform a round of .45 ball ammo. nothing really wrong with the .40 it's pretty much a ballistic twin to the .45 shooting 185gr rounds. it all comes down to which round you shoot best and which one you have faith in. Much like pistols, the XD is great but i prefer the glock. ymmv.

I dont think there is a difference in reality between 40 and 9mm

with todays science invovled in ballistic technology, the results are indistinguishable.

if you choose the appropriate round...

get the nine

unless it will screw up your psyche...then go that way :)

The XD-m in .40 allows 16+1, so that's not too bad. The cheaper standard XD in 9mm also holds 16+1, but you save $100 buying it over the XD-m

The XD is already made in .45, both GAP (dead item, only holds 8+1) and a 13+1 .45 ACP. The XD-m takes the longer/fatter grip configuration of the XD-45 acp, which allows the higher capacity in 9mm and .40.

I didn't see my preferred answer... XD45. 13+1 of .45acp 230 grain goodness. Don't like the way .40 short and weak recoils. 9's are for wimmen and children.;):D
