So I will start by saying that I just got my first 3.5" XM-18 slicer flipper and I love it. My one question is why did Rick use a flat head screw for the pivot and use allen head screws for the handle? Wouldn't an allen head pivot screw look so much nicer and if you are using allen for the handle screws why not keep them all the same design?

Is it possible to change out the pivot screw for an aftermarket one?

Thanks

I think the intent is ease of field mx/adjustment - a lot easier to find a coin or other flat object than an allen key.. Function over aesthetics, although I think XMs are sharp (hehe) regardless..

Simplicity. And in-field adjustment. Plus the official armorer's tool is ready to tackle all the hardware in one convenient and portable package...just have to swap the bit if dedicated to 3" duty as its ready for 3.5 & 24 at 5/64".

Op - If I may make a suggestion. As you mentioned, you just got it. Get to know it for awhile before considering any changes especially foundational to the design (wanna add a lanyard bead - go for it) but, swapping out OEM - Custom Made Parts ...
I wouldn't if it was my knife.

Yep..don't change these things that are core!

Edited my earlier post as I accidentally combined the tool sizes.

Posted above by Ishelson is the accuracy.

How about an all black DLC Wharncliffe Now that would be the knife to own

This is true...and I have the capability to do so...but most, if not all of the folks on this forum would have a cow...

I wouldn't change the pivot screw - I think I read somewhere on a couple different postings that the XM's are all hand-fitted which means it's not advisable to swap parts, etc...except for those which are "approved" such as the scales and spacers. I've replaced the small phillips screws for the clip and filler tab which were rounded out on my 2nd hand XM but that's about it. Having said that - if you are tinkering and you can make some custom pivot hardware work then it's all good.

A few years ago (2 or 3), I entered a give away here on the Hinderer forum for an armorers tool and a parts kit and won. The parts kit came with the normal stuff like spare clip, handle screws, and a couple sets of screws for clip and spacer. But it came with a couple items I didn't think they actually gave out. Those were a pivot and screw, and a gen-3 style blade stop and screw. Those last two items surprised me when I opened the package. I have a gen-3 so the spare blade stop and screw is nice to have, but I cant ever see wearing out a pivot and screw.

Gz, but after a while you'll find the flat screw very usefull. My armorers tool is on my keys so i always have it near me, but sometimes i'm upstairs, my keys are downstairs and i want to retighten the pivot. I just grab any straight piece of metal or plastic layong around and tadaa!

I don't like a lot of stuff on my keychain, but the armor's tool rides along in my grab-n-go. Often, I find myself without it or a coin and I keep my fingernails short (had to post that because I know the kind of posts that often follow) so...

Long ago, I discovered one XM can easily make minor adjustments to another. Since I usually carry two...

3.5 on a 3.5 (works on 24 too)...

3.5 on a 3"...

N2K something about that last picture just doesn't compute in my brain box, I have a bad aversion to torquing a very thin sharpened edge in a screw slot, sorry that is just me :)
