xm 18

Thank you bpeezer. As it happens I spent 21 years active duty military and then worked for the government. But I guess direct experience with Hinderer knives and the military doesn't weigh much against hearsay and hatred.

Man, you seem to be harboring some serious hatred for a whole lot of stuff. IIRC Rick Hinderer has a history serving with a fire department, and thought offering his knives to those who serve would be appreciated. The man makes incredible knives and chooses to restrict sales to American heroes. The knives may not be optimized for EMTs, but they're also meant to serve Military, Law Enforcement, and Firefighters. Don't hate.

Like I said, check the post record. It's not filled with cordial interactions. Someone just has an axe to grind. It's not worth it for you good folks to get drawn in.

It's a framelock, not a linerlock. If people pay $400 for a Sebenza there's no reason Hinderer wouldn't be able to ask $385 for his knives. He doesn't have the production capacity to keep up with demand, it's not like he's the one selling them for secondary market prices.

To the OP, you could buy a ZT 0560 now and wait for the supply to eventually meet demand ;)

No, he is not selling them on the secondary market, but his practice of selling them almost exclusivly to LEO etc... and his relativly low production capacity CAUSE the inflated secondary market prices.

Hinderer are hardly the only knives to sell above cost. A lot of custom makers are in the exact same boat, as well as some production stuff. RHK just seems to attract a lot more general visibility and, frankly, incivility.

I will never try to buy something that is not for me. These knives are for first responders, fire, police, military etc. I get it.
As far as I am concerned, they are off limits to me. I could afford them at the secondary price, but that to me is like paying extra to get into a party that I am not invited.
Cheers

I don't know if I'd use that analogy, but I get what you're saying, especially if you can afford it and choose not to. A lot of the angst is, it seems to me, from people that just cannot afford the cost to play. I'd love a Burch Midtech Dao, but that ain't happening heh, but guys like him are small enough to stay off the radar of the general masses and are more known by the smaller, intimate (and friendly) custom knife fans who are more invested into knives that the average joe is.

Understood. And agreed.
I would never knock something that I know nothing about. My little rant was more of a personal philosophy, which applies to most things in life. I am a complete knife (folders) enthusiast and love lots of different makes and kinds. This would apply to a knife that would cost $20 for some, $50 for others.
I would love to handle one of these specimens, and maybe I will one day, but only as a visitor. If I can pay the same price as anyone else, regardless of profession, for a Sebenza, Rockstead, or even have a custom made for me, then that's where I focus.
Not knocking or judging, from what I've read and seen, these baby's are nice. I can understand the need for this, as I am a collector.
Cheers

I get what you are saying, but I am the opposite. "Oh, I can't have that? Now I want it more!"

Thanks for your service Locutus :) may your knife collection grow to a dozen flawless pieces! :D

I figure Rick has access to a database for LEO’s and firefighters because I wrote him a letter asking him if I could order a knife from him.

At the time I was a volunteer industrial firefighter on the North Slope. I didn’t mention this in my letter because I didn’t feel like I qualified as a “real” 1st responder, and felt like it would be inappropriate to use this to my advantage.

Maybe it was the professional way I put in my request to him, ( Rick). Maybe it was because I didn’t grovel or lie. Maybe he just felt sorry for me. Maybe he knew that I would actually use the thing. (And I have) Maybe it was because I wrote him a real letter with paper and an envelope instead of e-mail. (I bet he gets hundreds of those a month.)

Maybe he found my name on the list of firefighters serving at Kuparuk/Prudhoe Bay. I dunno…..

All I know is that he sent me an XM-18 for $385.

The best part was that I didn’t lie about anything or violate my conscience to get one. That’s worth more than any knife anyway.

Oh, that definitely justfies the extra money and convinces me that EMTs really do carry a knife optimized for stabbing people! Come to think of it, with prices ERs charge, I'm surprised the EMTs aren't carrying gold-plated Glocks.

Just curious, what do you think the correlation is between what the hospital charges for ER visits and the wage an EMT makes working on a private rig? As a working EMT I can tell you we don't make anything on patient's hospital visits, just the transport. EMTs get paid a pretty lousy wage in most areas and if one wants to spend their hard earned cash on a reliable tool instead of piece of junk, let them. I bought one for everyday use and duty carry, not regretting it for one instant. But it's all a matter of perspective I suppose. You may only want pay $200 for it, but I was lucky enough to pay the direct rate for a product I deem worth it. You are entitled to your opinion but why try to ruin it for someone else?

You made some valid points here. As an LEO, I own a Hinderer but its still new in the box b/c I find it to be a big knife that may be more practical if you need a knife while wearing gloves. Most LEOs spend their hard earned cash on guns rather than knives. They are really impressed with a bench made production knife. I don't think too many LEOs know what a Hinderer or Chris Reeve folder was and probably not pay for one.
Most carry around a 20 to 50 dollar smith and wesson, and don't own a good sharpening kit.

Lacking on facts there and spreading misinformation.

The 3" and 3.5" XM retail for $385 and have done so for about 4 years with no change in price, therefore it is a $385 knife, not $200.
Some dealers do sell the XM for $385.

First responders, LEO & military have access to this $385 knife for $385, not $600.

There are members of this very forum who are LEO, first responders and military who own and use XM's.

These are all facts.

Would you mind elaborating? If that dealer isn't a "Dealer," can you email or PM me?

If you can't get your hands on one for a price you can stomach, you might want to try the Zero Tolerance 0566 or wait for the ZT 0562. The 0566 is a great knife for the money and I predict that the forthcoming 0562 will be extremely popular
and just the answer for those who cannot or will not pay the highly inflated price of a Hinderer on the secondary market. You might want to get in early on the 0562, I don't think ZT will be able to keep up with the demand.

To give the other side of the story, I own 2 XM-18's that I paid secondary prices for and I think they are worth every penny I paid, both in build quality, F&F, and pure pleasure in using. But each to their own opinion.

Me too! But three not two! :p

Business practice aside, I noticed the price on secondary market is decreasing steadily, it might be a Good idea to give it some time and see if it continues to decrease.
