Of course I think the word prepared is better than the word planning. But that's a quibble.
The main point is to be ready, prepared, planning for any eventuality--rather than thinking you can outsmart the future.
Our grandparents, and their grandparents, and their grandparents, were always putting something away for a rainy day, or learning a new skill or trade, or otherwise working to come closer to self-sufficiency.
Only today's combination of naive technological arrogance and head-in-the-sand historical ignorance ever argued otherwise.
Between binges of credit card-induced economic megalomania, that is.
Will Y2K push us over the edge? Maybe. Maybe not.
God help us all, though, if and when our society comes to believe no edge exists.
