Y2K and how it is affecting forumites (thoughts on)

Thanks, Mr. Yeackley.

Of course I think the word prepared is better than the word planning. But that's a quibble.

The main point is to be ready, prepared, planning for any eventuality--rather than thinking you can outsmart the future.

Our grandparents, and their grandparents, and their grandparents, were always putting something away for a rainy day, or learning a new skill or trade, or otherwise working to come closer to self-sufficiency.

Only today's combination of naive technological arrogance and head-in-the-sand historical ignorance ever argued otherwise.

Between binges of credit card-induced economic megalomania, that is.

Will Y2K push us over the edge? Maybe. Maybe not.

God help us all, though, if and when our society comes to believe no edge exists.

You can quote me now and later say i was wrong and i hope i am. We will have gas and oil shortages for sure as foreign countries ,especially Venzuela will have a hard time getting crude oil into the east coast. Some power failures for sure. stock market dive as supplies from overseas have problems coming in. But the biggest problem will be reaction of foreign nations especially Russia(military is not weak and they are deploying new missles as we speak) and China (takes over Canal in Dec. and threatens Taiwan). I hope i am 100 per cent wrong ,but i have this feeling that any major chaos in America will cause the BIG TWO to react against USA. So Y2k problem if real has me concerned about foreign involvment here on North american Continent. Us strategic nuclear forces have dwindled down in 10 years starting with Bush and finishing with Clinton to a mere shell of the 1980's. You asked my opinion. There it was.

I don' t plan on heading to the mountains but I will be planning to be wrong. Food, water, heating & cooking instruments, medicinal/ first aid supplies and of course my artillery will all be at hand. As already mentioned, if the worse does not happen then no big deal. You can drink the water and eat your non perishables and keep all others for future possible disasters.

Has anyone considered Economic Collapse, due to all these morons drawing all of their money out of the banks due to possible Y2K problems, and then the banks can't afford to run, and......

But, I got 1000 rounds for every gun I own (not Y2K, SOP.), and some water, some food, not really worried. But ready if I need to be

The good/bad thing about a nuclear war is that NOBODY can win. There are enough nuclear weapons stockpiled to blow up the whole world several times.Thats kinda dumb when you'll only get to see it once. Anyhow I think that if we have another war,God forbid, it will be conventional not nuclear. Why start a war if you can't win? And yeah there are some 3rd world countries with nuclear weapons trhat may not be that smart, but hopefully the UN will realize that too and do what needs to be done IF the time comes. Why worry about a nuclear war anyway? They'd come on the news say so and so has launched missiles, we launched a counter attack, then 5 minutes later everyones instantly gone quick and painless and nothing you could do about it anyway.

Fix it right the first time, use Baling Wire !

But let us suppose that nearly all of our nuclear deterrent is either stood down such as B52's(since the days of G. Bush) and nearly worthless as a deterrent or nearly eliminated(minutemen missiles have been dug up) which may leave the USA att with only sub forces of unknown remaining amount. The danger level of a first strike is greatly increased if our nuclear deterrent is nearly eliminated. The word ' on the street is that we have greatly cut down our strategic nuclear forces. Russia and China are going in the other direction. If Russia and China think they can strike first and only get a minimal retalitory strike at them, we could be in great danger in the next year or year and a half. The boys in China and Russia have been making some powerful statements over their fears of USA Hegemony especially since destruction of Serbia and missile strikes against Iraq, Sudan, and Afganistan. Cold War is still on ,but the big boy on the block has given up much of his artillery and substituted strategic weapons with police forces in 80 countries. Just a thought as we head into the unknown Y2k days.

On Y2K itself my thinking is very close to Spark's. The international scene is slightly dicier, see also: http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000817.html

Now, back to Joe Glessner and Allan Blade's debate at the start of the thread:

I would have done exactly what Joe and his buddy did: hang out, don't jump in unless it seems DAMNED important. As is, they determined there was no "clear victim", no real risk of harm, just two fools getting verbal.

Allan, a better question: what would you do if all of a sudden you saw a single dude being beaten and stomped while flat on the ground bleeding from the head? It's public as hell, there's at least eight bystanders around. To make things weird, let's say the assailants are four large women, no weapons visible at first glance other than heavy boots being used with VIGOR.

What would you do?

Hello,

Well to answer Jims question the way he presented it, i would first Call 911 on my cell phone, and if it Looked like he was in immminate jepordy of Dieng from the attack then Yes i would Intervene with Deadly force if possible, but only if his attackers and his injurys Required a Lethal Force to insure his /her survival. i mean after all this is my right as a Citizen, not only to protect myself from Gross Phisical Abuse which could lead to maiming or death but also to protect others if that form of assistance insures the FELONY and attack of the victem ends where if it wouldnt end would cause the victims Death or Gross life debillitating injurys as perscribed under the Deadly Force laws of the state this took place in.

in the original senario what was witnessed
buy the woman being in her car and another Person yelling at her for pulling /parking wrong and making an ass of himself verbally abusing her, does not under the law constitute Immediate jepordy, and thus lethal force or Physical contact with the offending party is not warranted.

That is the LEO`s job to figure out if any non life threatening acts accured or laws broken.

But yes if somone was in jepordy of imminate death due to an attack and i had a Firearm or Knife and with Lethal force on my part it would save said persons life,,then i hope the offending party has good insurance, because his policy is about to come due.

PS , and i guess if they were wearing Steel toed boots, this would be considered a deadly weapon,,if being applied to a HEAD.
Athough they wouldnt know for sure until the boots were examined at the Coroners office, where the perps bodys who i had to terminate to protect said Victims life were taken.. 8-)

Quoting Alan:

"in the original senario what was witnessed buy the woman being in her car and another Person yelling at her for pulling /parking wrong and making an ass of himself verbally abusing her, does not under the law constitute Immediate jepordy, and thus lethal force or Physical contact with the offending party is not warranted."

True. But they couldn't know that until getting close enough to see. "Close enough" seems to have been "across the street", which is where they stayed.

As for the rest, we're mostly in agreement. My view is that with -=four=- kickers/stompers, the "steel toed boot" issue is moot. I used that example because a couple of years ago, that's *exactly* what I ran across, although I should have mentioned it was within the tight confines of a subway car. My solution was to NOT draw my open carry knife, but to cover it with my right hand from being grabbed while putting my left out to the side and pushing all four of the "women" off. The victim staggered to the next car back, I retreated to a point where I "plugged" the door to get to him.

It was stupid, but it worked. The reason I say "stupid" is that I then got two nasty surprises: two of the "chicks" pulled out claw hammers one of which was dripping blood, and #2 was worse: one of the bystanders said "hey, those are GUYS!".

Yep. Homicidal transvestites. NOT my day.

They yelled and waved the hammers around while clustered about 15ft away. I held my ground, still didn't draw athough I had my hand on hilt. Jeez. What they didn't know (and not even the cops ever found out) was that I had an illegal-carry 4shot .22Magnum minirevolver on me, that's why I didn't back down
biggrin.gif
. They split, transit PD grabbed 'em. Because I didn't draw the cutlery or actually *hit* 'em, the cops saw me only as a "witness" and I wasn't searched...so "baby" the minirevolver never made an appearance.

Thank god.

Woulda been a lot less hairball with a CCW and a real gun
