i dont know how many times folks complain about the way EKI's are ground & that because of the grind ya cant get 'em sharp, etc, etc.

last nite i decided to sharpen my production CQC12 for the 1st time, i only carry it for SD and rarely use it but it was after 2 yrs starting to need it, i used a norton india like i always do on EKI's but couldnt find my gerber steel which is what i usually do the burr with, so anyway i just used the cardboard on the back of a notepad (like ernie says to do) and 5 mins later my '12 was good to go and easily taking off hair on my arm, easily, if this one isnt sharp i honesly dont know what sharp is lol. in fact it got so sharp i am gonna hold off for a little bit on getting it kreined (yes i know it will be sharper after tom gets thru with it lycosa lol & i am gonna get it done just later vs sooner)

anyway, point being, i wonder sometimes WTF with the funky griinds myself lol but with the right tools, the right technique and a little time any EKI will get plenty sharp, if yours wont its more likely your problem not the knifes grind lol.

as far as a real CG like a tanto '7 my SOCFK tanto again is plenty plenty sharp, hair shaving sharp, all it takes is the right tools and technique.

oh and i also did my custom '13 the 1st time last nite, again plenty sharp, i was slicing long thin ribbons of newspaper easily with it & the hair on my arm is -0- problem.

so, they will get plenty sharp i promise ya.

+1 bro

I have never had an issue getting an edge on an EKI.
I understand why some folks might be a bit thrown off
by the EKI blades but its not any different IMO.

I think its just that whole "its not what im used to" thing that gets folks.

I think my problem with Emerson knives was that I really didn't know how/or understand how to sharpen a blade (not just the Emersons).

Now that I do, they can EASILY get VERY VERY sharp.

Rchstag---That's the biggest hurdle in sharpening---understanding the correct technique(s). Like you said, once you get it, you got it.

I have a nice 8 stitch scar that says a spuper CQC7 can be sharp enough to slice flesh quite effectively. Darn thing was partially open in my pocket. Was quite a suprise when I pulled my hand out and blead all over the place as the knife was so sharp, I barely felt it.. Ya, they can be sharpened.

Where do you guys buy your sharpening stones, and what brands are best? Norton and DMT?
I know there are others too. I have a Sharpmaker, but I'd like to upgrade to whetstones or something of that nature.
I would like to practice at freehand sharpening to get my knives stupid sharp.

What do you guys recommend? Thanks. :)

I was worried about sharpening my super karambit because I had never tried to sharpen a recurve and all I had was a flat stone and a sharpening steel for kitchen knives...and I got it sharper than the factory edge.

amen74---I use a Japanese water stone, 1000 grit. Pull backwards until a burr forms, then strop it off.

I am new to this EKI thing though very pleased. I used my 7A enough in near a week I just had to tune up the edge. I use an Arkansas Hard Pink Translucent stone and I also strop. The knife is a freekin razor! I have a question though. I am a bit fuzzy regarding the edge or grind designation of these knives. My knife has what I would call a "Chisel Grind" but the description was "V Grind" so what do they call these? I am a fan of the Chisel grinds and they are very easy to maintain IMO. If someone can clue me in on that I would be appreciative. :)

Its a V grind with a single edge bevel. Some folks will say yay or nay either way but thats the best description I can give.

The actual chisel grinds are flat on the back side.

As for sharpening I seem to use a fallkniven stone the most,
dimond on one side ceramic on the other.
That and a strop keeps my EKIs tip top.

they are not a std "V" grind thats for sure, if i had a nickle for everyone who bought a commander expecting a std "v" grind and were disappointed i could buy a commander lol,

I've actually got to admit, I love my snubby (if I talk about it a lot, it's my most often carried/used knife, and only EKI, although I would consider an A-100 and a 7), but I used to have a ton of trouble sharpening it.

I can sharpen other knives just fine, just couldn't get the Emerson sharp...

I'll say this is completely due to my amateur abilities.

However, if I got another one, I would have to send it to Tom Krein again to make it a little more usable for me...

why not just send it back to EKI to sharpen it for you. they say it's like 20 bucks or so

or why not get the right stuff (probably less than $20) and learn to sharpen it yourself?

alright buddy calm down. he had mentioned he was going to send it to someone to have them sharpen it for him. i figured if he was going to send it out he might as well send it back to the people who made the knife.
