You screw up your last two pieces of 1/8" 1095 and have to order more :grumpy::grumpy::grumpy:
I know better than to do detail work when Im wore out and feeling like crap :(

Ouch! :) I hope next trip to the shop works out better. I've had similar problems, so I commiserate with you, man.

Been there done that. No my golden rule of grinding is: NEVER grind when I'm angry, tired or aggravated unless I feel like wasting steel...

I hear ya, the other day I was workin on a kydex sheath and nothing was working out. Seems like all of my fingers turn into thumbs when I'm wore out. Had big plans that day but had to stop and head for the barn.

At least you still have all your fingers. I sent a 25llb turning through the wall one day when I was feeling crappy. Packed up and went home. I was going to kill myself if I kept going. I normally grind skin off a few knuckles when I am tired. Happened this AM. Oh well there's always tomorrow.

Funny you should mention this.......had to pack it in early tonight myself because I could feel the screw ups approaching! Been up in the mountains for a few days with the wife and kids and dog, played hard, I'm wore out, then drove all the way home this afternoon and went straight for the shop.(I was having withdrawls) Anyway, it was okay for a bit but I knew I was going to mess something up if I continued. It never fails if I'm tired and out of sorts.

Sorry about the steel, glad to hear it was nothing more serious.

Nothing good ever happens when I get that tired. Knowing when to call it a day is one of the best skills you can develop!

Industrial engineering studies made many years ago show that when you are tired -- productivity goes down , quality goes down , and accidents go up !!
Put it away, get some sleep , come back refreshed the next day !

i'll +1 on screwing up when tired. i was roughing out a blade blank one evening and i was not feeling well and tired from it.
i ended up taking off too much metal on one side of the blade. luckily i was able to salvage the blank but the blade was a little narrower than i planned.

what i hate is being tired and hurting and only have a few minutes worth of work left then having to fight with my body to get it done and not screw up.

kentucky, if you like 1075 in both 1/8" and 3/16" you can get some free from your local john deere dealer. i get used opener and seperator discs that make good knives. i have used nothing else to make knives from since i started 20 years ago.

send me an email and i'll send you the info and the test results from a sample i sent in for testing. rje196021@gmail.com

Mete, when I do process engineering at work we use 8% loss after 8 hours. It's a cumulative loss, so 9 hours= 92%, 10= 84%, but I think you probably know that.

When I get tired in the shop I stop the work and clean up, if that doesn't clear my mind then I pack it in.... I clean my shop after I work anyways so either I'm refreshed and can work again or I'm finished for the day. My teacher always said that a cluttered mind will show in your work.

Well the steel wasnt that big of a deal really, I just hate that "Im stupid, why did I do that?" feeling..LOL

Have you ever considered making knives that reflect your mood when you're angry or worn out? Not saying these would be part of your flagship product line, by any means... but you may just find a creative muse in the kinds of mistakes you make when you're not at the top of your game.

While waiting on the next order of steel to arrive, see what you can do with the mistakes you made. Can you modify the mistake into a new design feature? Can you make the knife look more "angry" or "sleepy"?

Think about it. It might be cathartic. ;)

Working when tired leads to frustration, mistakes and worse. Having learned from those lessons, when I feel tired and get that irritated feeling I reach out for the off switch for the grinder, then the dust collector and the lights then walk away as the dust collector continues to wind down, and as it does so I start to wind down too, relax and forget about it for the day.
