I've been looking for months for a solo canoe for Class I & II whitewater that was affordable AND within reasonable driving distance. I finally found it just a few days ago. Today, I drove through the muck and snow to pick it up. It's a Bell Yellowstone Solo and it looks like its new! The owner said it had only been on the water once! Man, it's a pretty boat. :)

It's going to be a looooong wait until Spring! :(

Get a good PFD and don't look back. Congrats.

I used to paddle Class III and IV. I & II is pretty mild and just barely really qualifies as whitewater. It's been a really long time since I've paddled anything, though. You can bet I'll have a second boater with me for a while.

Yep, I do need a new PFD. The one I packed away 17 years ago has shrunk somehow. :)

Welcome to the club Scott Free. I own a Wenoah Adirondack in Kevlar flex core and will be buying an Old Town pack in 2010. Bells are great boats and we sold a bunch at the canoe shop. Keep the hairy side up!

You might want to wait just a bit on the OT Pack. While researching the canoe I might want, there was talk on one of the canoe forums about a new lighter alternative to Royalex. Some new type of plastic. It's supposed to turn a 50lb boat into a 30lb one. A guy from Mohawk was talking about it but wouldn't give a date for release. They wanted to do lots of testing. There is also apparently one or two other companies that will be offering the same. Maybe OT? I thought of waiting myself, but no one was talking about price or promising when.

And I used to run 20k races.

;)

Congratulations on a nice score. Bell Canoe Works does design/build a solid boat. Looks like a good design for for your planned usage.
Stay Safe,

I am really not following your posts in this thread. Surely I am not the only one.

"watcherass" is an admonition to take great care while on the water, to wear a good PFD, to watch the turbulence in the water, and to have a throw rope and spare paddle on board.

"and I used to run 20K races" refers to what I once was able to do, but am no longer in shape to do. It was a gentle reminder that time takes its toll on once expert athletes, and was meant in the same vein as "wacherass."

Both were addressed to Scott, btw.

Merry Christmas.

I was following Kismet—except for the thing about ever being an "expert athlete." I don't think I was ever that. :)

I think of all my boats my Mohawk is my favorite, though I'm not in the same category as you white water guys.

Flat water is my speed but the canoe is a convertible :)

It's great for trolling a line along the Mangroves.

Is that a Solo 14? It, the Odyssey 14 and the Mad River Freedom were all contenders. The Yellowstone Solo showed up first. Class I & II can just barely be called whitewater. You'd be fine on it.

I've paddled just a tiny bit in the Everglades. You guys in Florida are in paddling heaven. When I was down there, I got out of my canoe, stepped up on the bank turned just for a moment, then turned back to the canoe only to watch it sliding back out into the water. I looked across to the other side and up and down the banks looking for alligators, thinking "it's only getting farther away" before diving in after it. Obviously I'm still here to write this. :)

I'll take rapids over alligators any day!

that is so funny Scott! LMAO

and Congrats!!!

I've always wanted one, I did some class III white water a couple times, luv'd it!
now I just want flat water (and a canoe) lol
