Yahoo! I Bought a Canoe!

exciting aint it? i just got an old mohawk last september. i cant wait to get in the water all summer. been out a few times on the lake in nicer days but i really wanna do some canoe camping on the river. check out solotripping.com for some cool canoe info.

"wacherass" is an admonition to take great care while on the water, to wear a good PFD, to watch the turbulence in the water, and to have a throw rope and spare paddle on board.

"and I used to run 20K races" refers to what I once was able to do, but am no longer in shape to do. It was a gentle reminder that time takes its toll on once expert athletes, and was meant in the same vein as "wacherass."

Both were addressed to Scott, btw.

Merry Christmas.

Your shorthand went over my head and I was curious what you meant.

Thanks for the explanation, could've done without the attitude though. No need to be so excitable.

I've been looking for months for a solo canoe for Class I & II whitewater that was affordable AND within reasonable driving distance. I finally found it just a few days ago. Today, I drove through the muck and snow to pick it up. It's a Bell Yellowstone Solo and it looks like its new! The owner said it had only been on the water once! Man, it's a pretty boat. :)

It's going to be a looooong wait until Spring! :(

Sweet, congrats on the score.

Lots of great PFDs out there now with plenty of pockets to put your, "Oh crap gear into."

I hope spring comes quick for you.

I don't know man, gators will swim away from you, rocks kind of hold their ground :)

Glad I could entertain you with one my Scott-is-a-dummy stories! I got a million of 'em. :)

honestly I think I would have done the same thing. at least you looked around and thought about it.

I know someone who used to work with the gators in FL, I'll ask him what he would have done ;)

Congrats. Im another canoe enthusiast. They will get you to the spots not accessible to others.

Is that a Solo 14? It, the Odyssey 14 and the Mad River Freedom were all contenders. The Yellowstone Solo showed up first. Class I & II can just barely be called whitewater. You'd be fine on it.

I've paddled just a tiny bit in the Everglades. You guys in Florida are in paddling heaven. When I was down there, I got out of my canoe, stepped up on the bank turned just for a moment, then turned back to the canoe only to watch it sliding back out into the water. I looked across to the other side and up and down the banks looking for alligators, thinking "it's only getting farther away" before diving in after it. Obviously I'm still here to write this. :)

I'll take rapids over alligators any day!
I once slid my canoe down a steep river bank thinking it would stop when it hit the small gravel beach at the bottom. Da#$n thing slid out into the river and took off like it was on ice. I had to run 100+ yds down river and dive in to catch it. It apparently was very entertaining to the people watching but very embarassing for me.:D--KV

I always attach painters (nylon ropes) to each end of my canoes for this reason. Been there and done that! They make recovery, cartopping, anchoring, towing over shallows and mooring easier too.

Hmmm! 50 lbs and 30 lbs canoes, getting into spots that no other boats can!

For me its my Packrafts, the heaviest of which weighs 5 lbs 8 oz, and rolls up small! Oh' its easy to carry, even on your little finger.....

Congrats on the new boat! I'd like to get a canoe one day.

Right now, the family and I are riding in these.

When I was a kid, my dad built a plywood and fiberglass two-person kayak. Shortly thereafter he bought a two person Folboat (folding kayak.) Even on weekends back then, we had the rivers to ourselves.

Rafts, canoes, kayaks. All good.

Congrats on a great canoe.
Be carefull as they can become as addictive as knives.

Current inventory includes 3 solo's and 2 tandems. (1 Bell, 2 Blackhawks, 1 Wenonah, 1 Swift).

Canoes and yaks. My brothers and I fleet consist of three canoes and five kayaks. They are all heap big fun.

May I ask, why did you want a solo?

You'll not be disappointed with that boat. David Yost is the designer, and I have paddled none better IMO.I worked for Bell when Bell was "Bell". Still a nice handling boat.

Actually mine is the Wildfire. Same boat, different name. It's a 2005 model. Was Bell still Bell then?

I didn't think this thread would last this long. I hope it goes till April! This is going to be the longest winter ever, and seeing all the pics just might help.

Maybe I'll take the Mohawk down to the Keys with me this weekend, grab a cigar and a ukulele put on the Santa hat and try not to forget the rod holder.

I think we're in for a rainy weekend though.
