YAKR: Yet another knife recommendation (but with a twist)

I need some feedback. I am nearly ready to launch a raffle; the proceeds are going to the MPN Research Foundation, which is one of the few research institutions investigating the type of cancer which is killing me. I have some sponsors, and am working on lining up more. I will also be sponsoring out of pocket to make sure that the raffle offers the numbers I want.

Specifically: I want each raffle participant to get a t-shirt, and to have about a 1-in-20 chance of winning a prize package that is roughly equal to or greater than the value of the ticket they purchase. To that end, I want there to be five prizes, and tickets to be in the $75 range.

On the other side of the money coin, I want to raise about $7,000.00 for the foundation. It's too late to help me, but I've watched this cancer tear people and their families apart, and I want to help them. Selfishly, this also gives me an opportunity to take on one last project which will help me better understand how much cognitive dysfunction I am experiencing, and will make me feel like something other than a burden. I also admittedly enjoy working, and am going crazy not doing so.

I have, through committed sponsors and myself, four knives: ranging from a heavily customized Gayle Bradley 2, a Manix 2 DLC, an Emerson CQC-8, and a WE Knives 617. I also have t-shirts, and am talking with a major player in the flashlight market to provide 5 engraved lights. The prizes will consists of a knive and a light; a couple of the knives will be heavily customized by craftsmen who are active on this forum. A couple will be bone stock. I wish the knives could all be custom Rocksteads; but at least they're not fake Spyderco clones: I guess these are called "production midtech?"

At this time, I'm not comfortable talking about sponsors, and there are some other things I'm not comfortable discussing quite yet.

I have a telephone meeting later today with the director of development for the foundation; he has a full time team dedicated to such things, and he has investigated any legal issues, fiduciary obligations, etc.

I need help with, and only with, the 5th and final knife. I was thinking about an assisted opener from the Kershaw line; something that I would value between $80 and $100. However, please keep in mind that I'm not familiar with product lines other than Spyderco (hey, we all start somewhere), and I'm just watching the forum to see what people like.

The only other constraints: the colors for this cancer and red and orange, so I would like, if possible, to get something in one of those colors.

All ideas welcome, as long as they meet those constraints. I've given you an idea of what I have so far.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you comment.

A. Fantastic cause and idea, love what you're doing. B. House of Blades offers an upgraded version of the Kershaw Link with a red aluminum handle and S35VN blade in your price range that sounds about perfect.

I second the Blur. I hate to hear that you are dealing with this disease.

great cause Bob, and I think everyone who can should absolutely get behind it...

For those of you that have about 3-4 minutes, you should read his story.

Yes and more yes. Please post about where and when folks can donate. This community will absolutely get behind this.

Thanks everybody, I really do appreciate the positive words, and it sounds like so far we have two recommendations: The Kershaw Link and the Blur.

Please note: this final knife does not have to be Kershaw - so recommend away!

I had already decided to purchase a WE model 617xxx for the 4th place package. That knife arrived today; I picked the one with Tan G-10 scales and a 2 tone (but predominantly silver) blade. I had followed various threads on this knife here and elsewhere, and thought I knew what I was getting, but...wow. I wish they offered a red or orange handle, but they don't. I might, repeat MIGHT, attempt to die the scales an orange or red or combo (which is why I picked the tan handle).

However, the WE is gorgeous. It's so good lookin' that my wife won't touch it. Fit and finish are so much better than anticipated. My only complaint is that the two tone blade doesn't show two tones very much. Not a big deal at all, though. Oh, and if you care: WE still included the tool for working on the star screws.

Anyhow, I have a new question: hypothetically, you are considering buying a ticket. You review the rules and the prize packages, and you see that 4th and 5th place packages are basically the same.

Do you care? If so, is this is a good or bad thing?
