Yangdu's blems for 5/15 -- pix and steals.

Oh, how I would like to help :(
But, in the space of two weeks my khuk collection has gone from 0 to 10. The madness must stop!!!!! Or, at least, slow down...

Help me out here please. I've always heard great things, but I've never seen an HI blade up close, the only Kukris I've seen are the cheap ones you've seen all over at flea markets and such.

Are the fit and finish good on these blades (besides the said blemishes)? What can I expect from an HI blade?

I've got a Cold Steel LTC, and it cuts like crazy -- will it get outperformed by the 12-incher for $50 that I see up there?
Please note that the HI khuks are hand made and each one is a little bit different than the others even the same pattern by the same kami. So the HI will not look CNC machine made like a CS kukri. That aside, quality control on the HI's is very good. You will probably have to put a little effort into getting a razor sharp edge with the HI but once you do I think it will outlast the CS by quite a margin. The HI's will be considerably thicker across the spine also. Get one and give it a try.

I would be all over the 16.5 WW2 but I'm stuck here with two 18" WW2's, one by Sher and one by Bura. I tuned and tweaked both to near perfection, and now I just plain can't seem to part with them.

One of these days I'll pick up three Bura 16.5" WW2's ( maybe 4 ) every thime one comes up, finish them to perfection, hang one on my bed, and stash the others. one to use, one for a spare ( well, maybe two ) and one for someone worth such a gift, OK, maybe a couple extra.

Recently they raised our health insurance rates from $700 a month for mom, dad, and the kid to $2100 a month. Not a typo!!! Got plans to fix that but they're not yet implemented.

Thanks for the information. I've got a few choppers like the CS, Livesay, BK&T, and a few others, but I've always wondered if I should get an HI. It would definitely be a change in "blade style" for me -- but change is good!

I know what you mean.
I've already given a 15.5" AK to my dad, and I have a friend whose going to be getting a 20" AK for his Bday once I have money to buy one again. These knives are not only beautiful and practical ... they're indecently affordable.:)

I was once in the same quandry that you are. It is really not a fair comparison to try and match up an HI blade to a CS blade. The HI blades (and this is hard to describe)have something in them besides steel, wood and horn. There is something of the person that made it in each blade. I guess the word would be "connection". A connection which goes across the ocean and across the years, for that matter. I hope this doesn't sound too weird. As far as performance, take the same size AK as the CS to a dead tree and see what happens. It will astound you and that's no BS. I did it with my own two hands and saw the results with my own two eyes.

Resistance is futile. You have been assimilated.

I just got in, lucky for me the well didn't go dry. The last two khukuris purchased by me for gifts, were very rewarding. I have a couple more friends who are not familar with HI Khukuris, so.............If they are still available, I will take the BAS by Sher and the 18" WWII by Kumar. :)

Scrouge hard! Picked up one of these almost identical (length, weight and kami) awhile back and it is awesome! Just do it!

If you're looking for something to compete with a Cold Steel LTC (which I also own) I'd say any of the WWII or the BAS being offered will out chop it, hands down. They will be at least twice as thick as the LTC. The fit & finish of HI knives is excellent, but they are handmade, so expect little differences.
My 16" Chiruwa Ang Khola is smaller than the Cold Steel LTC, but outweighs it and outchops it. I took down a 6" tree with it in a few minutes. HI's blades have a much better feel and balance. However, if you are used to the gooey kraton handle of CS's knives, the horn handles may be a little hard for you. It took me a while to like them, and I still prefer the wooden handles a little. But it's hard to go wrong with a WWII or British Army Service khuk for your first purchase. The models for sale here are very nice specimens, and at half price, are an incredible bargain.
The performance for the price is a magnitude higher than Cold Steel (and I'm a CS fan- I have a Laredo Bowie, a Black Bear classic, the LTC, the Spike, and others). If you've been wanting to see what the fuss is about, this is a bargain.
Plus them khukuris is darn purty. :)

I like to think of the 12 inchers as great utility knives. Something for the every-day tasks, instead of a Swiss Army Knife (never under stood them). Though, they have a good deal of chop to them, for thier size, and can do bigger jobs as well. But if youre like me, and live in the city, and dont have too many trees or jungle to chop down. The 12" AK is mighty handy for wittling, minor pruning, loosening soil for gardening, precision chopping, etc...

Greetings, Borg. I cannot be assimulated as I have no brain. I do have some Khuks, but you can't assimulate them either.

I saw the WWII 16.5 Bura earlier but got tied up at work and couldn't email. I just typed up an email and double checked the forum but now I see Mad Mike got it.

Nice catch Mike, Bura is the best.

Maybe next time....:(

I'll take the 12" AK. Actually for a GySgt. of Phillipino extraction, he's on the small side and figures he can wear a 12" horizontally at SOB.

S/F, Mike

That really IS a cool avatar, Borg! I always see good ones like that, and think "that's awesome" but I'm terrible at coming up with them myself.
