Well the MRS. and I headed out to check out yard sales this morning. The whole town had them and I hoped to find some good stuff. Here is what I ended up coming home with. Two mess kits one from 1966 and thew other from 1944, and in pretty nice shape. The big cost $00.75 each. I am just thinking about all the goodies I can store in them, fire kits, ect. The other find I had to come home with is a Cattaraugus 225Q. I looked at it and wanted to offer the guy a little less then he had marked, but all I had at that point was 20s. So we ended up getting some breakfast then I went back with a couple smaller bills , and offered the guy 25 for the knife. So I think for 26.50 for my days spending I did pretty good. Doug

I am thinking of taking the handle to the belt sander (lightly) and giving it a nice cleaning, then a good soak to swell the washers back up. I am just not sure what to soak it in. I am also thinking a nice new sheath as well. Doug

Very cool finds  I think I saw an article about a similar knife in a recent issue of Backwoodsman.

Pretty cool finds  I hope to get to some sales this year myself. Last year my neighbor beat me to the one down the road and got 3 old classic Ka-bars for only $20.

Nice finds! This morning, my wife walked next door to our neighbors (of course! Who else lives next door?) garage sale. She was given an Oregon Myrtle burl about 8" long, by 5" wide, by 5" deep. I cut some of it up on the bandsaw this morning.

I did see that article in Backwoods man as well. I bet that burl looks real nice. and PrimitiveMan thanks for the tip. I will be giving that a try. Doug

man, I avoid flea markets and yardsales like the plague.

Because I always always end up buying something. By the time I'm 36, I'm going to need two moving trucks to haul my stuff around.

while yard saling today I bought a nice carbon steel chef knife for 25 cents. It had a light coat of rust that came off with the wire wheel. It has a very dark patina so Im thinking its 20+ years old.

It's your knife so you can do what you want, but I would suggest leaving it as is. That is a WW2 knife in better than average condition. The roughness in the middle of the handle is original, don't know why but they made them that way. It is a collectors item, don't mess it up! It is OK to use it because it has been used already. Steve

256newton Good thoughts. I looked at some on ebay today and they are not in as nice of condition as this one and I do see what you mean with the handle. Most of them were a lot like mine. Thanks for the input. Doug

Man what I wouldnt give to have that knife. You are so lucky! I have a Camillius kbar type knife that the guard is a little loose. I was wondering what to soak my knife in as well to swell up the leather stack. Thanks for the info.

Wildone39 there are like 10 of them for sale right now on ebay with varying prices. I cant wait to get this handle soaking, I just went over the knife with my rust eraser and boy it brightened it up nicely.

nice score there Doug.. that knife is cool.. i don't hit the yard sales that often these days... i do love to go to the fleamarket here in Santa Cruz... there is always some really cool random stuff to check out.. there is also a thrift store down town that i have scored some really quality gear/clothing at...:)

Thanks Mike. I have got her soaking in linseed oil now to swell the washers back up. She is sweet. Doug
