Hey Guys,

New to the forum, Great place for info! I have been wanting to start building a grinder for a while but I wanted to wait until I got a motor. well I went to a yard sale today and found oil burning Furnace and It a motor on it and I asked the guy how much he wanted for it and he said $2 so i snatched it up. Anyways, Here are the specs: It is a Westinghouse 1/8 HP - RPM - 1725
SN - 315P235. Do you think it will work good for a 2x72 belt grinder? Thank you for your time and help!!!

1Hp is the minimum for a 2 X 72 grinder and you will stall that at lower speeds.
But good score anyway as you can use it to build a blown forge.

The motor ran the blower on the oil furnace. If you have the blower, you may have an air supply for a blown burner forge. If not, then you have a pretty useless motor for powering any tool. As said, grinder motors are usually 1HP and greater. Even most small shop tools use 1/2HP and larger motors.

The blower was attached to the motor. I didn't think about using it for a forge, That is great. Thanks for the Info! I was really hoping on starting my grinder project, But i guess I'll just have to wait for another great find! Haha
Anyways, Thanks again to everyone who has replied!!

You should still build the grinder, just keep on the lookout for another more powerful motor.

I found a motor at a garage sale for 23$, 1.5 hp, 3450rpm tefc. I had to carry it a few blocks home though :)
